Drone Strike Hits US Embassy in Baghdad Amid Rising Middle East Tensions
Baghdad, March 2026 : The United States Embassy in Baghdad was struck by a drone early Saturday, escalating tensions in the region as conflict continues to intensify across the Middle East. According to security sources, the attack occurred at dawn inside Baghdad’s highly fortified Green Zone, though there was no immediate information on casualties.
An Iraqi Interior Ministry source said a booby-trapped drone hit the embassy compound, triggering smoke that was seen rising from the site. Officials are still assessing the extent of the damage, while authorities have not confirmed whether any personnel were injured in the strike.
The drone attack reportedly came about an hour after what officials described as a US airstrike targeting a residential area in the Karrada neighbourhood of the capital. According to Iraqi security officials, the strike killed a senior leader and two members of Iraq’s paramilitary force, the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF).
The airstrike also caused civilian casualties in nearby houses, with at least five residents reported injured due to the blast impact in surrounding buildings.
In an official statement, the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, through its Security Media Cell, condemned the escalation of military actions inside densely populated civilian areas. The statement described such operations as a “dangerous and unprecedented escalation,” accusing the strikes of targeting civilians and residential zones.
The command said the attacks violated human rights and called for the incident to be internationally recognised as a criminal act due to the risks posed to civilian lives.
This is not the first time the diplomatic mission has been targeted in recent days. On March 7, the United States Embassy in Baghdad came under rocket attack, with multiple explosions heard in the area before the embassy’s defence systems were activated to intercept incoming projectiles.
The latest strike comes amid a surge in hostilities across the region. Over the past several days, dozens of fighters belonging to the Popular Mobilisation Forces have reportedly been killed in attacks that the group has blamed on joint US-Israeli military operations.
Regional tensions have been steadily rising since late February following coordinated strikes launched by the United States and Israel on targets in Iran beginning February 28. In response, Iran and allied armed groups across the Middle East have carried out retaliatory attacks on American and Israeli interests in several countries.
Amid the escalating conflict, Donald Trump said military operations against Iran were progressing successfully. Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews on Friday, the US President claimed that American forces had delivered significant blows to Iranian capabilities.
“The situation in Iran is going very well. A lot of big hits today. A lot of big wins today,” Trump said, adding that the operations were aimed at neutralising what he described as a nuclear threat posed by Tehran.
As tensions continue to mount across the region, security analysts warn that further attacks and retaliatory actions could deepen instability across the Middle East.
