Chief Minister Hemant Soren Launches ‘District Sandbox’ Initiative at MedTech Innovation Day, Says AI and Innovation Are the Future of Healthcare
Ranchi, June 2026: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren participated virtually in the “MedTech Innovation Day” programme and inaugurated the ‘District Sandbox’ initiative by pressing a remote button. The programme was organized by the Bharatiya Vikas Trust (BVT) in collaboration with the PHIA Foundation at Hotel BNR Chanakya in Ranchi.
The newly launched District Sandbox initiative aims to promote the testing, evaluation, and large-scale adoption of innovative healthcare technologies. Through this platform, innovators will be able to test medical technologies in real-world public health settings, enabling assessment of their effectiveness and facilitating wider implementation.
The initiative, jointly led by BVT and PHIA Foundation, is designed to strengthen Jharkhand’s healthcare innovation ecosystem and improve health outcomes, particularly for rural, tribal, and underserved communities. It will provide a structured environment where healthcare solutions can be evaluated under actual field conditions before being scaled up.
Jharkhand Offers Immense Opportunities for Innovation
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Hemant Soren congratulated Bharatiya Vikas Trust, PHIA Foundation, and their partners for bringing the initiative to Jharkhand and creating a platform that encourages collaboration and innovation.
He said Jharkhand offers immense opportunities for innovators to develop practical solutions tailored to local needs and conditions, especially in tribal and rural regions. Such innovations, he noted, can significantly improve the quality of life for people across the state.
The Chief Minister emphasized that healthcare remains a major challenge worldwide, and in a state like Jharkhand—with its unique geographical and social conditions—the role of technology and innovation becomes even more crucial. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring better healthcare services reach remote and tribal areas.
AI Will Drive the Future of Healthcare
Highlighting the growing importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI), bioengineering, and real-time data, Soren said the future of healthcare will be technology-driven. He praised several innovations showcased during the event and assured startups and researchers of the government’s full support in translating promising technologies into practical solutions for public benefit.
During the programme, the Chief Minister also reviewed a portable digital X-ray machine that operates without film, developed by former students of IIT Dhanbad. The advanced technology was showcased as an example of how indigenous innovation can transform healthcare delivery.
Government Committed to Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure
The event was attended by Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari, Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh, National Health Mission Mission Director Shashi Prakash Jha, senior government officials, public health experts, innovators, healthcare professionals, and development sector partners.
Speaking on the occasion, Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari said that the healthcare sector has witnessed rapid progress under the current government. He highlighted the expansion of medical colleges, the increase in MBBS and postgraduate seats, and the recruitment of doctors as major achievements.
He also informed that the government is developing new models to improve the availability of specialist doctors in rural areas. Referring to AI-based healthcare services, he announced plans for a dedicated AI conference and revealed that the government intends to establish 745 “Abua Medical Stores” across the state.
Panel Discussions Focus on Healthcare Innovation
The programme featured two panel discussions focusing on the development of MedTech solutions for public healthcare systems and strategies to accelerate the adoption and expansion of healthcare innovations through collaboration among governments, innovators, healthcare institutions, and development partners.
PHIA Foundation Executive Director Johnson Topno highlighted the importance of the District Sandbox initiative, stating that it brings together governments, innovators, researchers, and communities to test and refine solutions addressing Jharkhand’s healthcare priorities. He expressed confidence that the initiative would help fast-track the adoption of innovations capable of creating meaningful improvements in people’s lives.
The District Sandbox initiative forms a key component of the broader innovation ecosystem being developed by BVT and PHIA Foundation, creating a pathway for promising healthcare technologies to move from testing and evaluation to large-scale deployment and impact.
