Apple May Raise Product Prices as AI-Driven Chip Demand Pushes Up Costs

New Delhi, June 2026 : Technology giant Apple may increase prices across some of its product lineup as rising costs of memory and storage components continue to squeeze profit margins, according to a report citing comments from outgoing Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Cook said the company has been absorbing higher component costs for an extended period but may no longer be able to shield customers entirely from the impact of surging semiconductor prices. The increase in costs has been driven largely by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure, which has sharply boosted demand for advanced memory chips used in AI data centres.

According to the report, Apple is facing mounting pressure from escalating prices for memory and storage components, particularly dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), a critical element used in smartphones, tablets, laptops and other consumer electronics. As technology companies invest heavily in AI capabilities, chipmakers are increasingly directing manufacturing capacity toward high-bandwidth memory designed for AI servers, reducing supplies available for traditional consumer devices.

Cook acknowledged the challenge, saying Apple has worked hard to mitigate the impact of supplier price increases and protect consumers from higher costs. However, he indicated that the situation has become increasingly difficult as component manufacturers continue to raise prices.

The Apple chief explained that growing volumes of memory production are being diverted toward AI infrastructure projects around the world. This shift has created tighter supply conditions at a time when consumer demand for electronic devices remains strong. As a result, manufacturers of memory chips have been able to pass on significant cost increases to technology companies.

While Cook suggested that price adjustments may become necessary, he did not provide details on when any increases might take effect. He also declined to specify which Apple products could be affected or the extent of potential price changes.

The comments reflect broader concerns across industries about the impact of the global AI boom on semiconductor supply chains. Industry organisations representing automakers, electronics manufacturers and retailers have warned that growing demand for AI-related hardware could contribute to shortages of key components and higher prices for a wide range of consumer products.

Cook emphasised that a more balanced supply environment is needed to ensure memory products remain affordable for consumer electronics manufacturers. He argued that pricing and availability must eventually return to more sustainable levels to support continued innovation and demand in the consumer technology market.

The report comes months after Apple announced a major leadership transition. In April, the company revealed that John Ternus would succeed Tim Cook as Chief Executive Officer from September 1, 2026, following a succession plan approved unanimously by the board. Cook will move into the newly created role of Executive Chairman, where he is expected to focus on strategic initiatives, engagement with policymakers and selected corporate responsibilities.

The developments highlight the growing influence of artificial intelligence on global technology supply chains and the challenges companies face in balancing innovation, profitability and consumer affordability.
