CME Credit Point System to Promote Voluntary Medical Services

Transparent and Inclusive Decision by Maharashtra Medical Council Under the Guidance of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis

Mumbai, March 2026: Under the vision and guidance of Devendra Fadnavis, the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) and the Government of Maharashtra are taking consistent steps to recognise and encourage voluntary services provided by medical experts who work to deliver healthcare in rural and remote areas.

In this context, a clear and transparent policy is being implemented to make the CME (Continuing Medical Education) credit point system more effective for voluntary medical service. After detailed deliberations, the council has clarified the existing system under which CME credit points are awarded for voluntary service.

According to the current framework, CME credit points are granted to recognised organisations, institutions, teaching establishments, and medical colleges approved by the Maharashtra Medical Council, based on specified criteria and guidelines. This system helps ensure that medical professionals continue updating their knowledge while also strengthening their sense of social responsibility.

The government has also opened a clear pathway for organisations, institutions, or hospitals that conduct surgeries, medical camps, or healthcare services in rural, tribal, and remote areas but are not yet formally recognised. Such institutions will be eligible to receive CME credit points once they obtain accreditation from the Maharashtra Medical Council.

This decision is expected to ensure the quality of medical services while making voluntary healthcare initiatives more organised, accountable, and effective. The accreditation process will also help improve planning of medical camps, maintain treatment standards, and prioritise patient safety.

Through this policy initiative of the Maharashtra Medical Council, medical professionals across the state are likely to receive greater encouragement to participate in voluntary service activities. At the same time, it will strengthen the government’s vision of providing quality healthcare for all.

The CME credit point system represents an important step toward balancing humanitarian service, professional skill development, and social responsibility within the medical community. It is expected to play a significant role in strengthening the overall healthcare system of Maharashtra.
