Trump Open to Iran Talks, Says Leadership Situation Unclear
March 2026: Donald Trump on Monday said he is open to engaging in talks with Iran, even as he acknowledged uncertainty over the country’s leadership following recent developments in the ongoing conflict.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting on the renovation of the Kennedy Center—recently renamed in his honour—Trump said that while some elements within Iran appeared willing to engage in dialogue, the situation remained unclear due to disruptions in its leadership structure.
“I’m willing to talk to everybody because sometimes good things come out of it,” Trump said, responding to questions about possible diplomatic engagement. However, he added that the current instability in Iran makes it difficult to determine who represents the country’s leadership.
“With the chaos after the killing of several levels of leadership, we have no idea who they are,” he said, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding decision-making authority in Tehran.
Trump also expressed doubt about whether Iran is ready to enter negotiations at this stage. “They’re taking a pounding. I don’t know if they’re ready yet, and we don’t even know their leaders,” he said.
His remarks came a day after Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran sees no reason to engage in talks with the United States. Araghchi asserted that Tehran had neither sought a ceasefire nor expressed interest in negotiations, signalling a firm stance amid escalating tensions.
During the interaction, Trump was also asked about Mojtaba Khamenei, who reportedly assumed a leadership role after the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, in a bombing earlier in the conflict.
“We don’t know if he’s dead or not,” Trump said, noting the lack of public appearances or confirmed information about Mojtaba Khamenei. He pointed out that unlike his father, who frequently addressed the public, Mojtaba has not been seen, fuelling speculation.
Trump said there were conflicting reports about Mojtaba Khamenei’s condition, ranging from serious injuries to possible death. “Nobody’s saying he’s 100 per cent healthy,” he remarked.
When asked what conditions the United States might set if talks were to take place, Trump declined to provide specifics, leaving the prospect of negotiations uncertain as tensions continue in the region.
