Build an Effective Security Shield with CCTV for Safer Cities – Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis
Establish a Corporation for CCTV System Regulation; Review Meeting of Information Technology Department
Mumbai, March 2026 : To ensure a fear-free environment for citizens, the state government is focusing on making cities safe and crime-free. Various necessary measures are being implemented, including strengthening the CCTV network across the state. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today directed officials to further reinforce the CCTV network and create an effective security shield for safer cities in the coming years.
He also instructed the Information Technology Department, in coordination with the Home and Urban Development Departments, to establish a corporation for effective utilization and regulation of CCTV systems. This would include leveraging private CCTV data in cities for crime investigation and developing AI-based intelligent surveillance systems.
The Chief Minister was speaking at a review meeting of the Information Technology Department held at the Vidhan Bhavan. IT Minister Adv. Ashish Shelar was also present.
Mr. Fadnavis said that the IT Department should finalize policies related to Artificial Intelligence, the “Mahanetra” CCTV-based initiative, and the Maharashtra Unmanned Systems Policy. He emphasized the need to develop systems that provide common AI-based services for micro, small, and medium enterprises. He noted that the future will increasingly rely on automation with minimal human intervention, and that modern technologies are enabling new innovations.
He further directed the formation of a new corporation named “MUSIC” (Maharashtra Unmanned System and Infrastructure Corporation) to promote the use of artificial intelligence, drone technology, and other automated systems in governance and public services.
Currently, drone technology is being used in the agriculture sector, and it holds significant positive potential for human life. However, he stressed the importance of drone research, development of indigenous drones and software, and preventing their misuse for harmful activities. All these aspects should be included in the new policy.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the need to establish integrated Command and Control Centres linked with CCTV systems in cities. These centres should involve domain experts and incorporate advanced technologies through private sector participation.
He expressed confidence that building such a comprehensive ecosystem would enable Maharashtra to compete globally in this sector.
The state possesses a vast amount of data from various schemes, available on the Mahasarathi portal. The Chief Minister directed the formulation of a Mahasarathi policy to guide the effective utilization of this data for maximizing benefits of government schemes.
Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Manisha Mhaiskar, Additional Chief Secretary (Agriculture) Vikas Rastogi, Director General of Police Sadanand Date, Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, and other senior officials were present. IT Secretary Virendra Singh gave a presentation during the meeting.
