Norway Determined to Stay True to Its Identity Ahead of High-Stakes England Clash

Miami, July 2026 : Norway head coach Stale Solbakken has insisted that his side will not abandon its attacking philosophy when it takes on England in a blockbuster FIFA World Cup quarterfinal, stressing that staying true to the team’s identity offers the best chance of creating history.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Saturday’s knockout encounter at Miami Stadium, Solbakken said his players have earned their place among the tournament’s final eight by playing fearless football and should not alter their approach despite facing one of the competition’s favourites.

“I want to see a Norway team that plays to its strengths and remains true to itself, just as we have throughout this World Cup,” Solbakken said.

Norway has enjoyed a dream campaign, reaching the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in 28 years. England, meanwhile, arrives with considerably more experience, having advanced to the last eight for the third consecutive World Cup.

While acknowledging England’s quality and depth, Solbakken believes Norway must focus on executing its own game plan rather than becoming overwhelmed by the calibre of its opponents.

“England have outstanding players all over the pitch,” he said. “They have dangerous wide players, Jude Bellingham in midfield and Harry Kane leading the attack. They are capable of scoring in many different ways, so we have to defend with discipline and compete for every ball.”

“At the same time, the most important thing is how we perform when we have possession. We have to be ourselves with the ball because that is what has brought us this far.”

The Norwegian coach also played down suggestions that the match would be defined by the battle between star strikers Harry Kane and Erling Haaland, insisting the contest is about collective effort rather than individual rivalries.

“I see this as Norway versus England, not Haaland versus Kane,” Solbakken remarked. “Of course, everyone knows Kane is England’s biggest match-winner, just as Haaland is ours. But football is always about the team.”

Haaland has been one of the standout performers of the tournament, scoring seven goals in just four matches to propel Norway into the knockout stages and beyond. Kane has been equally influential for England, netting six times during the competition to take his overall World Cup tally to 14 goals.

For Haaland, the encounter carries added personal significance. Born in England and currently starring for Premier League champions Manchester City, the prolific striker will face several club teammates, including Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guehi and goalkeeper James Trafford.

“It’s definitely a special match for me,” Haaland said. “I play my club football in England, I was born there, and now I’ll be facing teammates that I know very well. It’s going to be a fun occasion and one I’m really looking forward to.”

Despite England’s status as one of the tournament favourites, Solbakken believes his squad possesses the belief and quality needed to cause an upset if they perform to their full potential.

“Deep down, every player in our dressing room believes we can beat England,” he said. “But we also understand that we must produce our very best performance. If we fall below our highest level, England will deservedly go through.”

The Norwegian manager described the mood within his camp as calm but highly focused, adding that a certain level of pressure is essential in elite sport.

“The players are relaxed, but they are also highly competitive,” Solbakken explained. “You cannot perform at your absolute best without feeling a little pressure. That’s part of playing football at this level.”

Saturday’s quarterfinal promises to be one of the most eagerly anticipated matches of the tournament, with England aiming to continue its pursuit of a second World Cup title, while Norway seeks to extend its remarkable run and reach the semifinals for the first time in the modern era.

With Haaland in prolific form and Solbakken urging his side to remain fearless, Norway will hope its commitment to attacking football can overcome England’s experience and quality in what is expected to be a fiercely contested encounter.
