UN Chief Condemns Deadly Kabul Hospital Strike, Calls for Independent Probe

United Nations, March 2026 : UN Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the deadly Pakistani air strike on a hospital in Kabul and called for an independent and impartial investigation into the incident, according to his Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq.

The strike, which reportedly targeted a drug rehabilitation hospital in the Afghan capital, has led to massive casualties. Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities claim that more than 400 people were killed in the overnight attack between Monday and Tuesday, marking a sharp escalation in tensions between the neighboring countries.

Haq stated that the Secretary-General underscored the importance of international humanitarian law, which mandates the protection of patients, medical personnel, and healthcare facilities at all times. He emphasized that attacks on hospitals are strictly prohibited and could constitute war crimes under global legal frameworks.

According to the World Health Organization, at least ten health facilities have been damaged in the air strikes, raising serious concerns about the worsening humanitarian situation in Afghanistan. The UN has reiterated the urgent need for all parties involved to adhere to international law and ensure the safety of civilians.

Guterres also renewed his call for immediate de-escalation and cessation of hostilities, urging both sides to exercise restraint. While welcoming the temporary ceasefire agreed upon by Pakistan and Afghanistan during the Eid period, he expressed hope that the truce would be extended to prevent further loss of life.

The United Nations has reported widespread devastation across Afghanistan due to ongoing air strikes and cross-border attacks. Since March 6, at least ten provinces, including Kabul, have been affected. UN agencies estimate that around 115,000 people have been displaced, over 300 shelters damaged or destroyed, and nearly 160,000 individuals are facing acute food shortages, highlighting the deepening humanitarian crisis.
