Vijayalakshmi Denies Asset Division, Urges Justice for Sharmila Amid Family Dispute

Amaravati, March 2026 : In the midst of an ongoing legal dispute over family assets, Y. S. Vijayalakshmi, widow of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has clarified that no formal division of family properties has ever taken place. In a notarised statement issued on Friday, she also expressed concern that her son, Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, had been unfair to his sister Y. S. Sharmila and her children regarding asset distribution.

The clarification comes against the backdrop of a legal battle between Jagan Mohan Reddy and Sharmila, currently underway at the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). Vijayalakshmi, popularly known as Vijayamma, expressed hope that her son would now take steps to ensure fairness and justice for his sister’s family.

Rejecting claims made by leaders of the YSR Congress Party about an alleged settlement of family assets, she described such assertions as “misleading” and “far from the truth.” She maintained that all properties held by the family until 2009 have always been treated as joint family assets and remain undivided even after YSR’s demise.

Vijayalakshmi further clarified that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that has been cited in the dispute was only intended as a preliminary framework for future distribution. According to her, the document was neither registered nor legally enforced, and therefore does not constitute a binding agreement.

She emphasised that YSR’s original intention was to distribute the family’s wealth equally among his grandchildren. In this context, she stated that the properties mentioned in the MoU in favour of Sharmila rightfully belong to her, even though they may not fully reflect what she deserves.

Highlighting specific assets, Vijayalakshmi said that holdings such as Saraswati Cement and land in Yelahanka should be considered Sharmila’s rightful share. She also addressed claims regarding financial transfers, clarifying that funds reportedly given to Sharmila were only in the form of dividends and should not be mistaken for a division of core assets.

Reacting sharply to Vijayalakshmi’s remarks, Rachamallu Shivaprasad Reddy, spokesperson of the YSR Congress Party, termed her comments “unfair” and “hurtful” toward Jagan Mohan Reddy. He questioned why she had not raised concerns over criticism directed at her son and instead appeared to support a narrative that, in his view, undermines him.

Shivaprasad Reddy also disputed the claim that no division had taken place, asserting that property distribution had occurred prior to YSR’s death in 2009. He further argued that Jagan Mohan Reddy had, out of affection, given more than his share to his sister and had formalised an MoU after assuming office as Chief Minister in 2019.

According to him, the MoU was later withdrawn due to subsequent developments, including legal complications and Sharmila’s actions. He stressed that such sensitive family matters should ideally be resolved privately or through legal channels, rather than through public statements.

The dispute has drawn significant political and public attention, given the prominence of the YSR family in Andhra Pradesh politics. As legal proceedings continue, Vijayalakshmi’s intervention adds a new dimension to the ongoing conflict, underlining the complexities of both familial and political relationships intertwined in the issue.
