Chief Minister Inspects Under-Construction Patient Lodge in Shillong for Mizoram Patients
Aizawl, June 2026: Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma, who is currently in Shillong to attend a seminar organised by the Ministry of Finance, visited the under-construction Patient Lodge being built by the Government of Mizoram at Mawdiangdiang, near the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong, on Friday.
During the visit, the Chief Minister reviewed the progress of the project and examined arrangements being made to ensure that the facility can be made operational at the earliest for patients and their attendants visiting NEIGRIHMS Hospital.
The Patient Lodge is being constructed at an approved cost of Rs 4.19 crore with funding provided by the North Eastern Council (NEC). Officials informed the Chief Minister that the NEC has already released the entire sanctioned amount and that the project has now been physically completed. The facility has been designed to accommodate around 60 occupants.
The Chief Minister and accompanying officials also discussed several additional requirements that are not covered under the NEC-funded project. These include the construction of an approach road, paving of pathways within the premises, procurement of furniture, and other essential infrastructure needed before the lodge can be fully utilised.
Representatives of the Shillong Mizo Welfare Association also submitted requests highlighting the need for resting and waiting facilities for family members and attendants accompanying patients receiving treatment at NEIGRIHMS Hospital. They pointed out that such amenities would greatly benefit people travelling from Mizoram for medical care.
The need for residential accommodation for staff who will manage and maintain the facility was also discussed during the inspection. The Chief Minister directed that estimates and detailed project proposals for these additional requirements be prepared by the Public Works Department (PWD) and submitted to the Planning Department for further consideration.
Regarding water supply arrangements, officials informed the Chief Minister that the Government of Meghalaya has already granted permission for drilling a borewell at the site. Necessary work in this regard is currently underway to ensure an adequate and reliable water supply for the lodge.
The Chief Minister was accompanied during the visit by Pu N.G. Yirmayai, IES, Director (Health Sector), North Eastern Council, along with officials from the Planning Department and the Public Works Department (PWD) of the Government of Mizoram.
The Patient Lodge is expected to provide significant relief and convenience to patients and their families from Mizoram who travel to Shillong for specialised medical treatment at NEIGRIHMS, one of the premier healthcare institutions in the Northeast region.
