Middle East Tensions Escalate as Iran Claims Jet Strike, Israel Hits Tehran, Iraq Faces Fresh Attack
Baghdad, March 2026: The conflict in the Middle East intensified further on Saturday, with Iran, Israel, and regional actors exchanging sharp military and diplomatic moves amid an already volatile situation triggered by recent joint strikes.
Iran’s elite force, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), claimed that it successfully struck an Israeli F-16 fighter jet in central Iranian airspace. In a statement carried by its official outlet Sepah News, the IRGC said the aircraft was hit at around 3:45 a.m. local time by its aerospace defence systems. It also claimed that since the outbreak of hostilities with the United States and Israel late last month, Iranian forces have intercepted over 200 hostile aerial targets, including drones, cruise missiles, and fighter jets.
However, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) presented a contrasting account, stating that it carried out a major overnight operation targeting critical Iranian infrastructure in Tehran. According to the IDF, the strikes focused on facilities linked to the production of key components for ballistic missiles, significantly impacting Iran’s manufacturing capabilities.
The current escalation traces back to February 28, when the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Tehran and other cities. The attacks reportedly resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, along with several senior military officials and civilians. In retaliation, Iran unleashed multiple waves of missile and drone strikes targeting Israeli territory and US military assets across the Middle East, pushing the region toward a broader confrontation.
Amid the escalating violence, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi reiterated Tehran’s stance that it is not seeking a temporary ceasefire but rather a “complete, comprehensive, and lasting end” to the conflict. In remarks reported by international media, Araghchi described the US-Israeli strikes as “illegal and unprovoked,” urging the global community to take a firm stand.
He emphasised that while several countries are attempting to mediate, Iran has rejected short-term truce proposals. According to him, any resolution must include firm guarantees against future attacks and compensation for damages suffered during the conflict. He also noted that despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, Washington has yet to demonstrate genuine intent toward a lasting solution.
Adding to regional tensions, Araghchi issued a strong warning to the United Kingdom, cautioning that Tehran would respond if British involvement in the conflict deepens. His remarks came amid reports that US forces have been granted access to UK military bases. In a communication with UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, Iran conveyed that such cooperation could be interpreted as direct participation in aggression.
The UK, however, rejected the allegations and warned Iran against targeting British interests, signalling the risk of further escalation involving additional global powers.
Meanwhile, the situation in Iraq also deteriorated sharply. The Iraqi National Intelligence Service (INIS) reported that its headquarters in Baghdad was hit in what it described as a terrorist attack, resulting in the death of an officer. Initial reports indicated that a booby-trapped drone struck the facility, triggering a fire and causing significant damage.
The attack comes amid heightened tensions in Iraq, where Iran-aligned militias and armed groups have stepped up attacks on US-linked targets. Some factions claimed responsibility, linking the strike to ongoing hostilities and alleged movements of US personnel, though these claims remain unverified.
Iraq’s leadership has sought to balance internal security concerns with regional pressures. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani recently reaffirmed support for the Popular Mobilisation Forces, praising their role in safeguarding the country and maintaining sovereignty. He warned that any attacks on Iraqi security forces would not be tolerated.
At the same time, the United States Embassy Baghdad has issued urgent advisories urging American citizens to leave Iraq immediately due to the deteriorating security environment. The embassy cited repeated attacks by Iran-aligned groups, including missile and drone strikes targeting the heavily fortified International Zone in Baghdad and areas near Erbil International Airport.
With continued military exchanges, diplomatic standoffs, and rising proxy conflicts across the region, the crisis shows no immediate signs of de-escalation. The situation remains fluid, with the risk of a broader regional war increasing as more actors become entangled in the conflict.
