Imran Khan Alleges “Inhumane Treatment” of Wife as Health Concerns and Political Tensions Rise
Islamabad, March 2026 : Former Prime Minister and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Imran Khan, has expressed serious concern over the alleged “inhumane treatment” of his wife Bushra Bibi during her incarceration, intensifying the ongoing political and legal controversy surrounding the couple.
The message was conveyed through his son, Kasim Khan, who shared on social media that he had spoken to his father on March 21. In the statement, Imran Khan strongly criticised Pakistan’s judiciary, accusing it of compromising its integrity and targeting his wife as a means of pressure.
According to the message, Bushra Bibi has been kept in near-total isolation, allegedly spending 24 hours a day alone, with limited interaction even with her husband. Imran claimed that she is allowed only about 30 minutes of contact with him per week, and even that access is often denied. He described the situation as unjust and contrary to both legal and moral standards, asserting that such treatment is being used to “blackmail” him.
Imran also appealed to religious and ethical values, stating that harming women, children, or the elderly is against Islamic principles. He held the judiciary responsible for ensuring justice and called for accountability over what he described as a failure to uphold those standards.
Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi have been in custody since August 2023 and are currently held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Their detention has remained a focal point of political debate, with the opposition frequently raising concerns over their treatment and legal proceedings.
Meanwhile, concerns over Imran Khan’s health have also resurfaced. On Monday, he underwent a third eye-related medical procedure at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). According to hospital officials, the procedure involved administering an anti-VEGF injection into the eye to treat a condition known as central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), which affects blood flow in the retina.
After the procedure, he was monitored for a short period before being transferred back to jail. However, the move has sparked criticism from his party, which questioned why the treatment was conducted without the presence of his family members or personal doctors.
PTI leaders have reiterated their demand that Imran Khan be shifted to Shifa International Hospital for comprehensive medical evaluation and treatment. Party officials argue that transparency and proper medical care are essential, especially given the seriousness of his condition.
The government, however, has rejected allegations of negligence or lack of transparency, maintaining that all necessary medical care is being provided in accordance with protocol.
As tensions continue to escalate, the situation underscores the deepening political divide in Pakistan, with Imran Khan’s legal battles, health concerns, and allegations of mistreatment remaining at the centre of national attention.
