KKR Retires Jersey No. 12 to Honour Andre Russell’s Glorious Legacy

Kolkata, March 2026 : In a heartfelt tribute to one of their greatest match-winners, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have officially retired jersey number 12 in honour of West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell. The announcement was made during the franchise’s pre-season event, Knights Unplugged 3.0, marking a historic moment in the team’s legacy.

Fondly referred to as the “Eternal Knight,” Russell has been synonymous with KKR’s success over the past decade. Having represented the franchise from 2014 to 2025, the explosive all-rounder played a pivotal role in shaping the team’s identity with his match-winning performances, electrifying presence, and unmatched consistency.

Now returning to the setup as a ‘power coach’ ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, Russell’s association with KKR continues, albeit in a new role. His contribution during his playing days, however, remains unparalleled.

Over the course of 140 matches for KKR, Russell amassed 2,651 runs at a blistering strike rate of 174.17 while also picking up 123 wickets. He became only the second all-rounder in IPL history to achieve the rare double of over 2,000 runs and 100 wickets. His standout season came in 2019, when he was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) title after scoring 510 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 204.81 and an average of 56.66.

Russell also played a crucial role in KKR’s IPL title triumphs in 2014 and 2024. His ability to turn games single-handedly made him a fan favourite and a cornerstone of the franchise. Among his many records, his remarkable bowling figures of 5 for 15 against Mumbai Indians in 2021 remain the best by a KKR bowler in IPL history. With 123 wickets, he stands as the second-highest wicket-taker for the franchise, behind Sunil Narine.

Speaking on the occasion, KKR CEO Venky Mysore said the decision to retire jersey number 12 was a tribute to Russell’s immense contribution and deep connection with the team. “He wore the number with pride, and it became part of his identity. We felt it was only fitting to honour him by retiring it,” he said.

An emotional Russell expressed gratitude to the franchise, recalling his journey and achievements with the team. “Being part of two championship-winning squads with KKR is incredibly special. This franchise has given me unforgettable memories,” he said.

The gesture cements Russell’s legacy as one of KKR’s all-time greats, ensuring that jersey number 12 will forever remain a symbol of excellence and dedication within the franchise.
