Esterhuizen Powers South Africa to Series Win with 33-Run Victory Over New Zealand
Christchurch, March 2026 : A brilliant half-century by wicketkeeper-batter Connor Esterhuizen, combined with a disciplined bowling performance, guided South Africa national cricket team to a convincing 33-run win over New Zealand national cricket team in the fifth and final T20I at Hagley Oval on Wednesday. The victory helped the visitors clinch the five-match series 3-2.
Opting to bat first after losing the toss, South Africa posted a competitive 187/4 in their 20 overs, with Esterhuizen leading the charge through an explosive innings. In response, New Zealand fell short in their chase, managing 154/8 despite a few promising partnerships.
The Proteas had a steady start, scoring 43 runs in the powerplay while losing only one wicket—opener Tony de Zorzi, who made 21 off 22 balls. A crucial 55-run stand between Rubin Hermann and Wiaan Mulder provided momentum, taking the score to 76 at the halfway mark.
New Zealand struck early in the 10th over when Mulder (31 off 29) was dismissed, but Esterhuizen ensured the innings did not lose direction. Continuing his fine form from the previous match, he stitched together a 49-run partnership with Hermann, who contributed a valuable 39 runs before departing in the 16th over.
Esterhuizen then took control, reaching his half-century in just 25 balls. He went on to score a blistering 75 off 33 deliveries, smashing four boundaries and six towering sixes. His aggressive knock propelled South Africa to a formidable total of 187, setting up a challenging chase for the hosts.
Chasing 188, New Zealand made a brisk start but lost two key wickets during the powerplay, managing 46 runs. A middle-order fightback led by Bevon Jacobs (36) and Dane Cleaver briefly revived hopes, but regular breakthroughs by the South African bowlers kept the pressure firmly on.
The Proteas’ bowling attack proved clinical, with Gerald Coetzee leading the way. He picked up two wickets for just 21 runs, maintaining tight control. Mulder and Ottneil Baartman also claimed two wickets each, while skipper Keshav Maharaj chipped in with one.
Despite some resistance from Tim Robinson, who scored 25, New Zealand were unable to build sustained partnerships. The disciplined South African attack ensured that the required run rate kept climbing, eventually restricting the hosts to 154/8 in their allotted overs.
With this win, South Africa sealed the series 3-2, showcasing a strong all-round performance in the decider and finishing their tour on a high note.
