Historical heritage saved from collapse in Maheshwar

The renovation of the historic Jwaleshwar Mahadev temple in Maheshwar, Khargone district, is progressing rapidly, thanks to the district administration, public involvement, and the dedication of Commissioner Indore Shri Deepak Singh. With Rs 80 lakh raised through community contributions, the restoration work is becoming a notable example of public engagement in preserving heritage. This collaborative effort is realizing the vision of safeguarding this ancient site for future generations. Located on the riverbanks, the temple, which was at risk of collapsing due to its age, is now being meticulously restored.

Maheshwar of Malwa region is a centre of religious, historical, artistic and architectural art. There is a local saying that every pebble coming out of the Narmada river is a form of Shankar. Every temple of this city built on the banks of the holy Rewa river has been described in detail in the Puranas, scriptures and poems. There are thousands of temples on the banks of Narmada, but some of them have a special place, in which Jwaleshwar Mahadev temple has its own special place. Indore Commissioner Shri Deepak Singh took interest in preserving this historical heritage and with the co-operation of the district administration and the people of the area, today the renovation work of this ancient heritage is almost complete. The renovation of this temple, carried out with public cooperation, has revitalized and provided long life to this historical heritage.

The temple that is visible at present was renovated in the 17th century under the guidance of the Marathas, in which examples of special architecture like elaborately carved shikharas, doors and windows and intricately carved panels can be seen here. This temple offers a panoramic view of the excellent ghats and Holkar architecture. The confluence of Maheshwari River and Narmada River can also be seen from this place.

Restoration work is being done with Rs 80 lakh collected from public co-operation

The renovation of the ancient Jwaleshwar Mahadev temple located on the banks of Narmada in Maheshwar Nagar is almost complete. About Rs 80 lakh collected with public co-operation has been spent for the renovation work. To protect the temple from the floods of Narmada river, a 24 meter high and 4 meter wide gabion wall with a length of 110 metres has been built with stones. The estimated expenditure on the renovation work is about Rs 1 crore 50 lakh. Continuous efforts are being made at the local level to gather the material and money required for the construction of the temple through public co-operation.
