UN Forms Task Force to Tackle Global Food Risks Amid Hormuz Disruption

United Nations, March 2026 : As disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to impact global supply chains, Antonio Guterres has announced the formation of a special United Nations task force to address the growing humanitarian and agricultural challenges arising from the crisis.

According to UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the task force will focus on developing mechanisms to ensure the movement of fertilisers and essential raw materials, which are critical to preventing a potential global agricultural crisis. The group will be led by Under Secretary-General Jorge Moreira da Silva and will prioritise solutions that address urgent humanitarian needs.

The crisis has raised serious concerns beyond energy supplies. The Food and Agriculture Organization has warned that the disruption of this key maritime route could significantly affect global food systems. FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero described the situation as a “systemic shock,” noting that it threatens food security, agricultural production, and global markets.

Experts highlight that nearly 30 percent of globally traded fertilisers pass through the Strait of Hormuz, along with oil and gas required for their production. Any prolonged disruption could therefore have cascading effects on farming, food prices, and supply chains worldwide.

Dujarric said the UN task force will draw from past experiences in handling similar crises. He cited initiatives undertaken during conflicts affecting regions like the Black Sea, Yemen, and Gaza, where coordinated international mechanisms helped maintain the flow of essential goods. In particular, he referenced the 2022 Black Sea grain initiative, which enabled safe passage for food shipments despite the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, helping to avert famine in vulnerable regions.

The new mechanism being developed will involve close consultation with member states, while respecting national sovereignty and existing international legal frameworks. The aim is to create a cooperative approach that ensures uninterrupted access to critical agricultural inputs.

On the diplomatic front, Guterres has been actively engaging with key global leaders, including Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Adr Abdelatty, and Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, along with representatives from the United States and Bahrain. These discussions are part of broader efforts to stabilise the situation and build consensus for peaceful solutions.

In parallel, Guterres’ newly appointed personal envoy for the Iran crisis, Jean Arnault, will continue diplomatic outreach to all parties involved. The envoy will work closely with the task force to support both humanitarian and political efforts.

The UN believes that if successful, this initiative could not only ease immediate supply disruptions but also build confidence among nations and contribute to a wider diplomatic resolution of the ongoing crisis.
