Foundation Laid for Artificial Football Turf at Thenzawl Playground
Serchhip, March 2026: Minister Pu B. Lalchhanzova on Friday laid the foundation stone for the construction of an Artificial Football Turf at Thenzawl’s Lo-Tha-Zawl Playground, marking a significant step toward strengthening sports infrastructure in the region.
Addressing the gathering, the Minister said that many of the blessings people receive often go unrecognised, and urged citizens to value such developmental initiatives. He noted that despite global uncertainties and challenges, the government continues to work tirelessly to ensure progress and development.
He called upon the residents of Thenzawl and nearby areas to take collective ownership of the project and ensure its successful implementation. Emphasising that such facilities are not easily achieved, he urged the public to understand their importance and support the workers involved. He also encouraged citizens to carefully review the project plans and monitor the quality of work to ensure that the facility meets expected standards upon completion.
The Minister expressed confidence that the new football turf would enhance the importance of Thenzawl, attract more visitors, and strengthen unity among local residents. He highlighted that while infrastructure is crucial for promoting sports as a livelihood, equal importance must be given to the dedication and discipline of players. He added that sports should not only be seen as competition but also as a means of joy, well-being, and community bonding.
According to Mizoram State Sports Council Secretary Pu Henry C. Lalrawnkima, the project has been sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) of the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India, with an approved cost of Rs 11.856 crore. The construction work has been awarded to M/s Décor India, Guwahati, with a work order issued on February 24, 2026, amounting to Rs 10.33 crore.
The artificial turf will measure 111 metres in length and 76 metres in width, with a playing area of 105 by 70 metres. It will feature FIFA-approved 60 mm quality turf, proper drainage systems, and a surrounding boundary wall. Additional infrastructure will include fencing, entry gates, a two-storey pavilion with seating capacity for around 200 spectators, and a gallery accommodating approximately 230 people.
The project also includes public amenities such as separate toilets for men and women, facilities for persons with disabilities, internal roads, and a 100,000-litre water tank.
The event was chaired by Sports & Youth Services Department Commissioner and Secretary Pu V. Lalsangliana, with local leaders and sports representatives also addressing the gathering.
