Bangladesh Clears IPL Telecast, Signals Shift Towards Commercial, Apolitical Sports Policy

New Delhi, March 2026 : In a major policy shift, Bangladesh has opened the door for the telecast of the Indian Premier League, with newly appointed Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan confirming that there are no restrictions on airing the popular T20 tournament in the country.

The announcement marks a departure from the stance of the previous interim administration, which had imposed a ban on IPL broadcasts, creating uncertainty among broadcasters and cable operators ahead of the 2026 season. Swapan clarified that the current government does not intend to mix politics with sports and will instead approach the issue from a commercial standpoint.

“No one applied to us to telecast the IPL. We don’t want to mix politics with sport. We will look at it from a commercial perspective, and if any channel applies to telecast the IPL, we will consider it positively,” Swapan said, indicating a more flexible and business-oriented policy direction.

He further noted that international sports broadcasters, including Star Sports, are free to air IPL matches in Bangladesh if they choose to do so. Emphasising the government’s open approach, Swapan stated that authorities would neither impose restrictions nor compel any broadcaster to carry the tournament.

“We will not bar anyone from telecasting it. If Star Sports wants to telecast it, they can. If any of our channels want to telecast it, we will take it positively, but we will not force anything,” he added.

The development comes after earlier indications from State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque, who had suggested that the government would review the ban and consult stakeholders. Swapan’s latest remarks now effectively confirm that the restrictive policy has been rolled back.

The Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh has also welcomed the move, stating that there are currently no directives preventing the broadcast of IPL matches. Office Secretary Rezaul Karim Lablu said cable operators would not block any feed in the absence of official instructions.

Lablu emphasised that directives issued under the previous interim government led by Muhammad Yunus are no longer applicable. “If Star Sports telecasts the IPL in Bangladesh, they can do it because no one has asked us to stop it. Those directives of the interim government do not have any value. If this government asks us to stop it, we will do so,” he said.

The earlier ban had been imposed amid tensions following a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India asking Kolkata Knight Riders to terminate the contract of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman for IPL 2026.

With the latest policy reset, broadcasters and fans in Bangladesh can now look forward to the return of IPL action on their screens, reflecting a broader effort by the government to separate sports from political considerations while encouraging commercial opportunities in the media and entertainment sector.
