Shivakumar Defends Congress Candidate Choices, Hits Back at Rivals Over ‘Family Politics’ Charge

Davanagere, April 2026 : D. K. Shivakumar on Thursday strongly rebutted allegations of promoting family politics in the selection of candidates for upcoming by-elections, asserting that such practices are prevalent across all major political parties, including the BJP and JD(S).

Addressing the media in Davanagere, Shivakumar dismissed criticism from opposition parties regarding the Congress fielding family members of established leaders. He pointed out that political legacies are a common feature in Indian politics and not unique to the Congress.

“Shamanur Shivashankarappa and his son have been active in politics for many years. This is not something new or limited to one party,” he said, responding to BJP’s claims that a single family dominates politics in the region.

The Congress has nominated Samarth Mallikarjun, grandson of the late Shivashankarappa, as its candidate from Davanagere. Samarth’s father, S. S. Mallikarjun, currently serves as Minister for Mining, Geology, and Horticulture, while his mother, Prabha Mallikarjun, represents the constituency in Parliament. Similarly, in Bagalkot, the party has fielded Umesh Meti, son of the late H.Y. Meti.

Turning the tables on the opposition, Shivakumar questioned the BJP’s stance by referring to senior leader B. S. Yediyurappa and his sons, as well as multiple family members within the Janata Dal (Secular). “Are there not several members from the same family active in the BJP and JD(S)? Why single out Congress?” he asked.

Highlighting the legacy of late leaders, Shivakumar praised the contributions of Shivashankarappa and H. Y. Meti to the development of Davanagere and Bagalkot districts. He said both leaders had served in various capacities, including as MLAs, ministers, and MPs, leaving behind a strong developmental footprint.

“I have toured both constituencies, and I can say they are more developed than even Bengaluru in some aspects. This reflects the dedication of these leaders,” he remarked.

Shivakumar also underscored the emotional connect between the leaders’ families and the people. He said members of minority communities had expressed their appreciation for the support extended by Shivashankarappa’s family during times of need. “This trust is what drives our campaign,” he added.

Speaking about the broader campaign strategy, Shivakumar said he would also be participating in election campaigns in Assam and Kerala. He highlighted the Karnataka government’s guarantee schemes, stating that nearly ₹60,000 crore is being spent annually to benefit citizens across all sections of society.

“Our guarantee committees have reached every household. People are aware of these schemes and are supporting us,” he said. He contrasted this with Assam, alleging that similar benefits there were being selectively distributed to BJP workers, whereas Congress aims for inclusive welfare.

Referring to rising inflation, Shivakumar said essential commodities, including fuel, cooking gas, and agricultural inputs, have become increasingly expensive. “Due to the shortage of LPG, people are going back to firewood stoves. This reflects the failure of the Central government,” he said, defending the need for welfare schemes to support citizens.

On the political scenario in Kerala, he expressed confidence in the INDIA alliance’s prospects, citing public dissatisfaction over price rise and governance issues.

Responding to remarks by former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai about a possible leadership tussle within Congress, Shivakumar dismissed the speculation. “He may be speaking from his party’s experience. In Congress, we are united and will abide by the high command’s decision,” he said.

When asked about a possible call from the party leadership in Delhi, Shivakumar said he had no information on the matter.

Later in the day, he campaigned in support of Samarth Mallikarjun at Akhtar Raja Circle in Davanagere. The event was attended by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, along with several ministers, MPs, and MLAs, reflecting the party’s united push in the by-election battle.
