Sameer Rizvi’s Explosive 90 Powers Delhi Capitals to Six-Wicket Win Over Mumbai Indians
New Delhi, April 2026 : A sensational innings from Sameer Rizvi lit up the Arun Jaitley Stadium as the Delhi Capitals cruised to a comfortable six-wicket victory over the Mumbai Indians, registering their second consecutive win in IPL 2026.
Chasing a target of 163, Delhi found themselves in early trouble at 73/3, but Rizvi’s blistering knock of 90 off 51 balls turned the game on its head. Displaying a mix of power and finesse, he smashed seven fours and seven sixes at an impressive strike rate of 176.47, anchoring the chase with remarkable authority.
The innings was a continuation of Rizvi’s growing impact in the tournament, as he once again stepped in to rescue his side under pressure. His partnerships proved crucial—first a 66-run stand with Pathum Nissanka, who contributed a steady 44, and later an unbeaten 78-run partnership with David Miller, who calmly finished the game with 21 not out. Delhi eventually reached 164/4 in just 18.1 overs, with 11 balls to spare.
Rizvi’s innings also etched his name in the record books. His seven sixes are the most by a Delhi Capitals batter against Mumbai Indians in IPL history. Among Impact Players, only Jos Buttler has scored more runs in a single IPL innings.
Earlier, Delhi’s chase began on a shaky note. KL Rahul fell early to Deepak Chahar, while Nitish Rana was run out after a mix-up, courtesy of a sharp effort from Jasprit Bumrah. Despite the early setbacks, Nissanka played a counter-attacking knock, finding boundaries with ease and keeping Delhi in the contest.
Rizvi initially took his time to settle but soon shifted gears in dramatic fashion. His aggressive strokeplay came to the fore in the 11th over when he unleashed a flurry of shots against Corbin Bosch, collecting 20 runs in a single over. The crowd erupted as he brought up his half-century in just 31 balls, marked by consecutive sixes off Mayank Markande.
Mumbai’s bowlers struggled to contain the onslaught. Even the experienced Bumrah failed to break through as Rizvi continued to dominate, targeting both pace and spin with equal ease. He dispatched Chahar and Shardul Thakur with a series of boundaries and towering sixes, including a standout shot over deep extra cover that showcased his brute strength.
Miller joined the attack towards the end, striking a few boundaries to ease the pressure further. Though Rizvi narrowly missed out on a well-deserved century—falling for 90 while attempting another big hit—the result was already sealed in Delhi’s favour.
Earlier in the match, Mumbai Indians had posted 162/6, with Suryakumar Yadav top-scoring with 51 and Rohit Sharma contributing 35. However, their total proved insufficient on a surface where Delhi’s batters eventually found their rhythm.
With this convincing victory, Delhi Capitals have made a strong start to their home campaign, while Mumbai Indians will need to reassess their bowling strategy, particularly in the middle overs, after another challenging outing.
Brief scores:
Mumbai Indians 162/6 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 51, Rohit Sharma 35; Mukesh Kumar 2-26, Axar Patel 1-22) lost to Delhi Capitals 164/4 in 18.1 overs (Sameer Rizvi 90, Pathum Nissanka 44; Deepak Chahar 1-20, Mitchell Santner 1-22) by six wickets
