Trump Announces ‘Productive Regime Change’ in Iran, Signals Tough Nuclear and Trade Measures
Washington, April 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced what he described as a “very productive regime change” in Iran, outlining a sweeping framework that combines strict nuclear restrictions, potential sanctions relief, and aggressive trade penalties.
In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump said the United States would work closely with Iran following recent developments, including a two-week ceasefire agreement and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
“The United States will work closely with Iran, which we have determined has gone through what will be a very productive regime change,” Trump wrote, signalling a shift toward conditional engagement after a period of heightened tensions.
A key pillar of Trump’s announcement was a firm stance on Iran’s nuclear programme. He asserted that Tehran would no longer be permitted to enrich uranium under any circumstances. “There will be no enrichment of Uranium,” he said, adding that the US would collaborate with Iran to remove what he referred to as deeply buried nuclear material.
Trump described plans to “dig up and remove all of the deeply buried nuclear ‘dust,’” suggesting a focus on dismantling elements of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. He also emphasised that such materials remain under strict surveillance, citing advanced monitoring systems.
“It is now, and has been, under very exacting Satellite Surveillance,” Trump said, referencing oversight capabilities linked to US space-based systems. He added that no materials had been moved since the recent military strikes.
Alongside the hardline nuclear stance, Trump pointed to ongoing negotiations that could ease economic pressure on Iran. He indicated that discussions were underway regarding tariff adjustments and sanctions relief, hinting at progress in diplomatic talks.
“We are, and will be, talking tariff and sanctions relief with Iran. Many of the 15 points have already been agreed to,” he said, though he did not provide specific details about the terms or the stakeholders involved.
However, Trump’s message also included a strong warning aimed at countries supporting Iran militarily. In a separate post, he threatened sweeping economic consequences for any nation supplying weapons to Tehran.
“A country supplying military weapons to Iran will be immediately tariffed… 50 per cent, effective immediately. There will be no exclusions or exemptions,” he declared, signalling a willingness to escalate trade measures as a deterrent.
The dual approach—offering the possibility of sanctions relief while simultaneously threatening punitive tariffs—reflects a strategy that blends economic pressure with conditional diplomacy. It underscores the administration’s attempt to leverage both incentives and coercion to influence Iran’s actions.
The announcement comes at a critical juncture in US-Iran relations, with the fragile ceasefire offering a narrow window for negotiations. While Trump’s remarks suggest optimism about a potential breakthrough, the mix of conciliatory and confrontational measures highlights the uncertainty surrounding the path forward.
