Armenia as Diplomatic Efforts Continue Amid Regional Tensions

New Delhi, April 2026 : External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Saturday announced that another 312 Indian fishermen have been safely evacuated from Iran and brought back to India through Armenia, as part of New Delhi’s ongoing efforts to protect its citizens amid escalating tensions in West Asia. He also expressed gratitude to the Armenian government for its crucial support in facilitating the operation.

Taking to the social media platform X, Jaishankar confirmed the development and thanked his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan for enabling the safe transit. The evacuation marks yet another successful mission under India’s coordinated diplomatic and logistical outreach in the conflict-affected region.

This comes close on the heels of a similar operation earlier this month. On April 5, as many as 345 Indian fishermen stranded in Iran returned safely to Chennai after being evacuated via Armenia. These back-to-back missions highlight the urgency and scale of India’s response as tensions in the Gulf region continue to disrupt normal life and movement.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, these evacuations are part of a broader initiative aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of Indian nationals caught in volatile zones. So far, more than 1,200 Indians have been successfully evacuated from Iran, with 996 of them routed through Armenia, underscoring the country’s role as a vital transit partner in the crisis.

Armenia has emerged as a key facilitator in these humanitarian efforts, providing a secure corridor for evacuation flights and coordinating closely with Indian authorities. Jaishankar had earlier acknowledged this cooperation, thanking both the Armenian government and Mirzoyan for their continued assistance during a challenging time.

Meanwhile, the geopolitical situation in the region remains tense, with diplomatic efforts underway to prevent further escalation. Delegations from the United States and Iran have arrived in Islamabad for high-stakes negotiations aimed at easing tensions in the Gulf.

Leading the American delegation is Vice President J. D. Vance, who reached Islamabad to participate in the talks. Speaking to reporters before departing from Joint Base Andrews aboard Air Force Two, Vance expressed cautious optimism, stating that the discussions are expected to be constructive and positive.

The negotiations represent the first formal engagement between Washington and Tehran in the current phase of tensions. They are being conducted under the framework of a fragile two-week ceasefire that has temporarily reduced hostilities but remains uncertain in its longevity.

However, several challenges continue to cast a shadow over the talks. Ongoing military actions, including Israel’s strikes on Hezbollah, and disagreements over Lebanon’s role in any prospective agreement, have added complexity to the negotiations. These developments could potentially derail progress if not carefully managed.

The US delegation also includes special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who are expected to push for a structured and outcome-oriented framework, guided by directives from the White House and Donald Trump.

As diplomatic efforts unfold, India continues to prioritise the safety of its citizens abroad, demonstrating a proactive approach in responding to crises.
