US-Iran Nuclear Talks Stall as Trump Backs ‘Final Offer,’ Says JD Vance

Washington, April 2026 : High-stakes nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran ended without a breakthrough after more than 21 hours of intense discussions in Islamabad, with US Vice President J. D. Vance confirming that Washington has now presented what it calls a “final and best offer” to Tehran.

Speaking to reporters after the marathon talks, Vance revealed that US President Donald Trump was closely involved throughout the negotiations, maintaining constant communication with the American delegation. According to Vance, the negotiating team remained in touch with the White House multiple times during the prolonged discussions, underscoring the importance of the diplomatic effort.

“We leave here with a very simple proposal, a method of understanding that is our final and best offer,” Vance said, adding that the next move now rests with Iran. He noted that despite sustained engagement and several substantive exchanges, the two sides were unable to bridge their differences.

Vance emphasised that President Trump had directed the delegation to approach the talks with sincerity while maintaining firm boundaries. “The president asked us to come in good faith and make every effort to secure a deal. We did exactly that,” he stated, highlighting the administration’s commitment to diplomacy despite the lack of agreement.

At the heart of the impasse lies Washington’s demand for a long-term and verifiable commitment from Iran to abandon any pursuit of nuclear weapons capability. Vance made it clear that the United States is not seeking short-term assurances but a durable framework that guarantees Iran will not develop or acquire the means to produce nuclear weapons in the future.

“We need a clear and affirmative commitment that they will not seek nuclear weapons or the tools necessary to rapidly develop them,” he said. “This is not about temporary promises — it’s about long-term security and stability.”

The Vice President indicated that while discussions were constructive in parts, Iran ultimately chose not to accept the conditions outlined by the United States. He added that Washington had clearly communicated its “red lines” during the negotiations and remained consistent in its expectations.

Despite the breakdown, Vance suggested that the US side had demonstrated flexibility during the talks. “We were willing to be accommodating and explore different pathways, but unfortunately, we were not able to make meaningful progress,” he said.

The negotiations also involved close coordination with the broader US national security apparatus, with senior officials in Washington actively supporting the delegation. Vance noted that the team remained aligned with key policymakers throughout the process.

While the immediate outcome appears uncertain, the US administration has signalled that the diplomatic channel remains open, pending Iran’s response to the proposal. The stalled talks highlight the deep mistrust and complex geopolitical stakes surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme, leaving the future of any potential agreement hanging in the balance.
