Samson, Mhatre Power CSK to 192/5 Against KKR in Chennai

Chennai, April 2026 : A blistering start from Sanju Samson and Ayush Mhatre, followed by solid contributions from the middle order, guided Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a competitive total of 192/5 in 20 overs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday.

Asked to bat first, CSK made their intentions clear from the outset. Samson came out firing, smashing boundaries in the opening over to put KKR on the back foot early. Despite losing skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad cheaply for just seven runs, CSK maintained a high tempo in the Power-play.

Youngster Ayush Mhatre was the standout performer in the early overs, playing a fearless knock of 38 off just 17 balls. Taking on the KKR pace attack, including Cameron Green and Vaibhav Arora, Mhatre peppered the boundary ropes with an array of attacking strokes. His aggressive approach ensured CSK raced to 72/2 at the end of six overs, laying a strong foundation.

At the other end, Samson anchored the innings with composure, crafting a fluent 48 off 32 deliveries, including four boundaries and three sixes. Just when he appeared set for a half-century, Kartik Tyagi struck with a sharp inswinger to dismiss him, giving KKR a much-needed breakthrough.

Following the explosive start, KKR’s spinners clawed their way back into the contest. The experienced duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy tightened the screws in the middle overs, restricting the flow of runs and forcing CSK into a relatively quiet phase. Between the eighth and 14th overs, the home side managed just 55 runs as the visitors regained control.

However, CSK found momentum again through Dewald Brevis, who played a counter-attacking knock of 41 off 29 balls. He built a crucial 51-run partnership with Sarfaraz Khan, who chipped in with a steady 23 off 18 balls. The duo rotated strike effectively while picking their moments to attack, ensuring CSK remained on track for a strong finish.

KKR responded with timely breakthroughs, as Narine dismissed Sarfaraz with a clever variation. Tyagi, meanwhile, stood out in the death overs with disciplined bowling, using his variations effectively to pick up key wickets and finish with impressive figures of 2/35.

In the final overs, CSK struggled to fully capitalise on their strong platform. The KKR bowlers kept a tight leash on big hitters like Shivam Dube and Jamie Overton, preventing a late surge. Only eight runs came off the final over, reflecting KKR’s effective execution at the death.

From a commanding position of 162/3 after 16 overs, CSK’s lower order could not accelerate as expected, but the early fireworks and Brevis’ late push ensured they posted a challenging total on a surface that offered assistance to bowlers.

For KKR, Tyagi’s composure under pressure and Narine’s control in the middle overs were standout performances, helping restrict CSK below the 200-run mark.

Brief Score:
Chennai Super Kings – 192/5 (20 overs)
(Sanju Samson 48, Dewald Brevis 41, Ayush Mhatre 38; Kartik Tyagi 2/35)
vs
Kolkata Knight Riders.
