NDA to Launch Nationwide Protests Against INDI Alliance Over Women’s Reservation Bill Defeat
New Delhi, April 2026 : The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is set to launch a nationwide protest campaign on Saturday against the opposition INDI alliance following the defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha. The bill, which proposed 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament, failed to secure the constitutionally mandated two-thirds majority, sparking a sharp political confrontation between the ruling and opposition blocs.
The proposed legislation, aimed at enhancing women’s representation in legislative bodies, was put to vote after an extensive day-long debate in the Lok Sabha. Despite receiving 278 votes in favour and 211 against, the bill fell short of the required threshold for passage. The outcome has triggered strong reactions from the NDA, which has accused the opposition of deliberately obstructing what it described as a historic reform.
Leaders within the NDA have announced that protests will be held at district headquarters across the country, with the BJP Mahila Morcha taking the lead in organising demonstrations. The campaign is expected to mobilise party workers and supporters on a large scale, focusing on raising awareness about the bill and its implications for women’s political participation.
According to party leaders, the protest campaign is intended to highlight what the NDA has termed an “anti-women agenda” of the opposition alliance. The ruling bloc has alleged that the INDI alliance’s resistance to the bill reflects a lack of commitment to empowering women in governance and decision-making roles. At the same time, the campaign aims to build public opinion in favour of the legislation and generate broader support for women’s reservation.
The issue is also likely to become a key political talking point in upcoming elections, particularly in states such as West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, where both alliances are expected to intensify their campaigns. NDA leaders believe that the bill’s defeat could resonate strongly with voters, especially women, and shape electoral narratives in the coming months.
Following the bill’s rejection in Parliament, women Members of Parliament from the NDA staged a protest within the Parliament premises, expressing disappointment over the outcome. They reiterated their commitment to securing reservation for women and vowed to continue efforts to ensure greater representation in legislative institutions.
The opposition, however, has maintained that its stance on the bill was guided by concerns over its provisions and implementation, though specific objections have varied among parties within the alliance. The disagreement has further widened the political divide between the two blocs.
The developments have set the stage for a broader national debate on gender representation and electoral reform. With both sides preparing to take the issue to the people, the fallout from the bill’s defeat is expected to influence political discourse in the run-up to key elections.
As the NDA moves forward with its protest campaign, the controversy surrounding the women’s reservation bill underscores the continuing challenges in achieving consensus on major constitutional reforms in India’s parliamentary system.
