Kerala Congress CM Race Narrows to Satheesan vs Venugopal as Alliances Tilt Balance
Thiruvananthapuram, April 2026 : The race for the Chief Minister’s post in Kerala within the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has now narrowed to a direct contest between VD Satheesan and KC Venugopal, with senior leader Ramesh Chennithala gradually losing ground due to limited organisational backing and weak public momentum.
What unfolded over the past week was not a conventional political debate but an intense internal battle, largely playing out on digital platforms. Supporters of both Satheesan and Venugopal mobilised aggressively, turning social media into a battleground. Leaders from different levels of the party, including state Congress chief K Sudhakaran and even younger figures like Thiruvananthapuram councillor Vyshana Suresh, voiced support for Venugopal. In response, Satheesan’s camp set up coordinated online campaigns, rebranding groups and building strong digital outreach to consolidate support.
Despite the initial presence of three contenders, the contest has now effectively become a two-way fight. More importantly, political signals from key allies suggest that momentum is shifting in favour of Satheesan.
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), the second-largest constituent in the UDF and a decisive force in the Malabar region, has emerged as a key player in this leadership question. A recent visit by Wandoor MLA AP Anilkumar to Panakkad—home to the influential Thangal family—sparked speculation that efforts were being made to secure IUML backing for Venugopal. However, party insiders indicate that IUML leadership, under Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, is inclined towards supporting Satheesan.
According to senior IUML sources, Satheesan’s leadership during a critical phase for the Congress has been a decisive factor. He is credited with rebuilding the UDF after its defeat in the 2021 Assembly elections and leading the alliance to notable performances in bypolls, the Lok Sabha elections, and local body polls. “He built the ‘Team UDF’ narrative and revived the party when it was at its weakest. Ignoring that contribution would be unfair,” a senior leader said.
At the same time, IUML leaders have expressed concern over the public nature of the leadership tussle. Party General Secretary PMA Salam criticised the debate as premature, stating that discussions about the Chief Minister’s post should only take place after election results, not during the campaign.
The Kerala Congress (Joseph group), another key UDF ally, has also shown a preference for Satheesan. Leaders from the group pointed out that prior to the elections, there was little discussion around Venugopal or Chennithala as potential Chief Ministers, and that it was Satheesan who guided the alliance’s campaign and strategy.
Despite this, Venugopal retains strong support within sections of the Congress organisation. Grassroots leaders from the Youth Congress, Mahila Congress, and INTUC have publicly backed him, highlighting his role as a strategist and organiser. Supporters argue that Venugopal has been instrumental in sustaining the party during its decade-long period out of power, including managing financial resources and coordinating support from Congress units in other states.
They also credit him with meticulous election planning, including candidate selection based on survey data, extensive constituency visits, and bringing in high-profile campaigners such as DK Shivakumar and Sachin Pilot. According to his supporters, Venugopal’s behind-the-scenes work has been crucial in strengthening the party’s organisational structure.
On the other hand, Satheesan’s leadership style has become a subject of intense debate. Critics within the party describe him as overly aggressive, warning that such an approach may not align with the Congress tradition of consensus-building. Some fear that his style could alienate key community organisations such as NSS and SNDP, whose support has historically been important for the party.
However, Satheesan’s supporters argue that the political landscape has changed significantly and that a more assertive approach is necessary to counter cadre-based parties like the CPI(M) and the BJP. They credit him with bringing discipline, clarity, and a renewed sense of purpose to the party.
Political analysts also note that much of the public and political scrutiny over the past five years has been directed at Satheesan, rather than Venugopal or Chennithala, indicating his prominence as the face of the opposition. His firm stance against alliances with communal forces and efforts to rebuild support among Christian communities in central Kerala are seen as key achievements.
Observers point out that Satheesan has managed to strike a balance between maintaining independence in decision-making and engaging with influential social and religious groups. His growing statewide appeal and resilience in the face of legal and political challenges have further strengthened his position.
Sources within the All India Congress Committee (AICC) suggest that Venugopal had quietly explored the possibility of a Chief Ministerial bid, testing public sentiment and gauging internal support. However, these efforts reportedly failed to gain widespread traction. Some insiders have also alleged that favourable media coverage for Venugopal may have been strategically placed, though such claims remain unverified.
Adding to Venugopal’s challenges is the perceived shift in the stance of Rahul Gandhi, who is believed to be more inclined towards Satheesan. Given Gandhi’s influence within the party, this is being seen as a significant factor in shaping the final outcome.
As things stand, the Congress in Kerala appears to be moving towards a clearer leadership choice, with Satheesan emerging as the frontrunner. However, the final decision will depend not only on internal dynamics but also on the electoral outcome.
With the elections approaching, the leadership question remains crucial, as the Congress seeks to regain power in the state. Whether organisational strength or public leadership ultimately prevails will be decided in the days ahead, but for now, the balance appears to be tilting steadily in one direction.
