Vijay Backs Independent Candidate in Edappadi After TVK Nominee Disqualified

Chennai, April 2026 : In a notable political development ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, C. Joseph Vijay, president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has extended support to an Independent candidate in the Edappadi Assembly constituency after the party’s official nominee was disqualified during the scrutiny of nomination papers.

The decision follows the rejection of the TVK candidate’s nomination, leaving the party without a direct contestant in the constituency. In response, Vijay announced that TVK would back Independent candidate Premkumar, who is now in the fray from Edappadi in Salem district.

In a message posted on social media platform X, Vijay described Premkumar as a close associate and a former administrator of his fan club, referring to him as a “brother.” He stated that the party had unanimously decided to support Premkumar under the circumstances and called on party workers and supporters to unite behind him.

Vijay urged voters in the Edappadi constituency to cast their ballots in favour of Premkumar, highlighting the “television set” symbol allotted to the Independent candidate by the Election Commission. He specifically asked voters to identify the symbol on the ballot and support it to ensure victory.

“Although we are unable to contest directly due to the rejection of our candidate’s nomination, we consider Premkumar as our representative in this constituency,” Vijay said. He also appealed to TVK cadres and local leaders to work collectively and intensify their efforts to secure a decisive win.

The actor-turned-politician also made an indirect remark targeting those he accused of trying to obstruct the party’s electoral prospects. He suggested that Premkumar’s victory would serve as a strong response to attempts aimed at blocking TVK’s symbol and limiting its participation in the electoral process.

The Edappadi constituency, currently represented by senior AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami, is expected to witness a closely contested battle. The entry of a TVK-backed Independent candidate has added a new dimension to the political contest, potentially influencing voter dynamics in the region.

With campaigning entering its final phase, Vijay’s endorsement is likely to energise grassroots supporters and boost the visibility of Premkumar’s campaign.
