Feature Article: Children’s Future Lies in Our Plate — A Holistic Approach to Nutrition, Parenting, and Lifestyle

By Ms. Namita Pandey (Nutrition Consultant, UNICEF)

Raipur, April 2026 : Today’s childhood is undergoing a significant transformation. The rapid rise in obesity among children is no longer just a health concern—it has become a clear reflection of our changing lifestyles. Long hours spent in front of mobile and television screens, reduced time in playgrounds, and the easy availability of junk food have together limited children’s natural physical activity. As a result, diseases such as Type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and thyroid disorders are now emerging at an early age. Alongside these, issues like low self-confidence, social isolation, and mental health challenges are also increasing.

In Chhattisgarh, the state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, is prioritising the health of children and mothers through sustained initiatives. Awareness campaigns related to nutrition and health are being taken to villages to ensure that every family has access to accurate information and essential services. Under the guidance of Minister Lakshmi Rajwade, the Women and Child Development Department is implementing several initiatives focused on maternal and child nutrition. It is widely acknowledged that holistic child development requires not just government schemes but active participation from families and society. Reviving traditional food practices, spreading nutritional awareness among mothers, and ensuring balanced diets for children are key steps in this direction.

Beyond Nutrition: A Shared Responsibility

Traditional Diet: A Strong Foundation

National Nutrition Fortnight 2026 highlights that the path to a healthy life begins in our own kitchens. Millets such as ragi, bajra, jowar, and kodo-kutki are rich sources of nutrition. They help maintain healthy weight, improve digestion, and provide sustained energy. Dishes like ragi idli, bajra upma, and kodo khichdi offer a perfect balance of taste and health.

Holistic Development Matters

A child’s health is not limited to food alone—it is a collective responsibility. Parents must ensure variety and balance in meals, teachers should give equal importance to sports along with academics, and society must value children for their energy and curiosity rather than their physical appearance. Only then can a healthy and confident generation be nurtured.

The First 1,000 Days: Building the Future

Scientifically, the period from conception to a child’s second birthday is extremely critical. This is when brain development is at its fastest pace. At birth, a child’s brain is about 30 percent developed, which rises to nearly 90 percent by the age of five. During this time, proper maternal nutrition, family care, and a positive environment lay a strong foundation for a child’s mental and emotional growth.

“7-Star Meal Plate”: A Simple Model for Balanced Nutrition

The “7-Star Meal Plate” is a concept that emphasises a balanced and diverse diet. It includes essential nutrients such as proteins, iron, folic acid, calcium, fluids, vitamins, and adequate calories to ensure proper nourishment for both mother and child. This initiative goes beyond being a scheme—it represents a foundation for building a healthy society. Issues like malnutrition and anemia not only affect mothers but also impact a child’s birth weight, immunity, and brain development.

Changing Habits for a Better Tomorrow

Nutrition Fortnight reminds us that health is not a short-term campaign but a continuously evolving culture. This culture develops in every household kitchen, every school lunchbox, and every neighbourhood playground.

Today, there is a need to shift priorities—from screens to playgrounds, from junk food to traditional diets, and from neglect to awareness. Because a healthy childhood is the strongest foundation for a strong Chhattisgarh and a prosperous India.
