Use water carefully keeping in mind the impact of El Nino – CM Devendra Fadnavis

101.77 TMC more water storage in dams compared to last year

Mumbai, April 2026 : Information was given in today’s state Cabinet meeting that about 653.63 TMC water storage is available in various dams of the state.

Compared to last year, this year there is an increase of 101.77 TMC water storage. Last year this storage was 551.86 TMC. However, due to irregular rainfall caused by the impact of El Nino this year, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis appealed to use water carefully so that any shortage next year can be managed. Additional Chief Secretary of the Water Resources Department, Deepak Kapoor, through a presentation, provided information about water storage in all dams of the state and the possible effects due to El Nino.

Due to the impact of El Niño, water storage had decreased by 12 percent in 2014 and about 14 percent in 2015. As a result, water scarcity had arisen in both years. On October 15, 2014, there was 872 TMC water storage, while on the same day in 2015 it was 625 TMC. In comparison, on October 15, 2025, water storage was 1330.97 TMC. This storage stands at 653.63 TMC as on April 21, 2026. Compared to last year, this year there is an increase of about 101.77 TMC water storage. In this regard, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed that strict planning of water storage in the state should be done and austerity measures should be implemented to ensure availability of drinking water till the end of August 2026.

He also appealed that since there is a possibility of less rainfall this year due to the impact of El Niño, water should be used carefully from now so that sufficient water is available next year.
