Vivek Ramaswamy Wins Ohio GOP Primary, Set for High-Stakes Governor Race
May 2026 : Indian American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy has secured a decisive victory in the Republican primary for Ohio governor, emerging as the party’s official candidate for the upcoming general election. Backed by former US President Donald Trump, Ramaswamy won an overwhelming 87 per cent of the vote, defeating rival Casey Putsch in a contest marked by controversy and personal attacks.
Ramaswamy will now face Democrat Amy Acton in the November election. Acton, a physician and former state health director, ran unopposed in the Democratic primary, setting the stage for a direct and closely watched contest in a politically significant state.
The primary campaign drew attention not only for its political stakes but also for the tone of the contest. Putsch, an auto racing team owner, faced criticism for racially charged remarks directed at Ramaswamy, including derogatory references to his Indian heritage. He also falsely questioned Ramaswamy’s eligibility, citing his immigrant background—claims widely dismissed as baseless.
Ramaswamy’s victory marks another milestone in his rapid political rise. He first entered national politics during the 2024 presidential race, where he initially challenged Trump for the Republican nomination before withdrawing and endorsing him. Following the election, Trump appointed Ramaswamy to co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency alongside tech entrepreneur Elon Musk. However, his stint in that role was brief, reportedly ending after differences between the two high-profile figures.
With Trump’s endorsement, Ramaswamy shifted his focus to state politics, launching his campaign for Ohio governor. His strong financial backing—bolstered by an estimated net worth of $2.5 billion—has positioned him as a formidable candidate with significant resources at his disposal.
If elected, Ramaswamy would make history as the first Hindu governor in the United States and the third Indian American to hold a gubernatorial office, following Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley. His candidacy reflects the growing diversity in American politics and the increasing prominence of Indian Americans in public life.
Ohio’s political landscape may work in his favour. The state has not elected a Democratic governor in over three decades, and Republicans currently hold both Senate seats. Trump also carried the state comfortably in the 2024 presidential election, giving Ramaswamy an initial advantage heading into November.
However, challenges remain. Rising economic concerns, including inflation and global instability linked to tensions in the Middle East, could influence voter sentiment. Additionally, fluctuations in Trump’s popularity may impact down-ballot races, including Ramaswamy’s campaign.
At 40, Ramaswamy brings a blend of business acumen and political ambition to the race. A graduate of Yale Law School, he built his fortune through ventures such as Roivant Sciences and Strive Asset Management, transitioning from finance to politics in recent years.
As the campaign moves toward the general election, all eyes will be on Ohio, where Ramaswamy’s candidacy
