BJP Demands Mamata Banerjee Accept Defeat, Rejects Her Refusal to Resign
May 2026 : A political war of words has erupted following Mamata Banerjee’s decision not to step down as Chief Minister after her party’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday said the electoral verdict reflects the will of the people and urged her to accept the outcome with humility.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma stated that the question of resignation was no longer relevant as her tenure had effectively ended with the election results. He accused Banerjee of attempting to hold on to power despite lacking a mandate. “It appears she wants to remain in the Chief Minister’s chair forcefully. The public has not given her the right to continue,” he said, adding that the defeat was a consequence of her party’s past actions.
Sharma further remarked that while the Trinamool Congress may have managed electoral processes earlier, this time it failed to secure victory. “This is the result of democracy, and it must be accepted with folded hands,” he said.
Echoing similar sentiments, BJP national spokesperson R. P. Singh criticised Banerjee for questioning the outcome. He used a Hindi idiom to suggest that post-defeat allegations hold little value and pointed to high voter turnout—reportedly around 92 per cent—as a sign of public confidence in the electoral process.
Senior BJP leader Ram Kripal Yadav also weighed in, stating that arrogance has no place in a democracy. He emphasised that leaders must respect the people’s mandate and said Banerjee should step aside in light of the results.
The remarks come after a major electoral setback for the Trinamool Congress, which lost power in West Bengal after 15 years of uninterrupted rule. Despite the defeat, Banerjee has refused to resign voluntarily, arguing that the outcome does not reflect the true will of the people.
Addressing the media, she claimed that the results were influenced by irregularities, including alleged vote manipulation. “Why should I resign? This is not a real defeat. The results are a reflection of misappropriation and vote-looting,” she said, dismissing calls for her resignation.
Banerjee also used the occasion to stress the need for strengthening the opposition alliance against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance at the Centre. She revealed that several prominent leaders from the opposition bloc had reached out to her following the results, expressing solidarity.
Among those she mentioned were Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Akhilesh Yadav, and Hemant Soren, all of whom, she said, assured her of support.
As political tensions rise, the debate over accountability, electoral integrity, and democratic norms continues to dominate the post-election discourse in West Bengal, with both sides firmly standing their ground.
