WFI Bars Vinesh Phogat from National Tournament, Issues Show-Cause Notice

New Delhi, May 2026 : Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has found her much-anticipated return to competitive wrestling stalled after the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) barred her from participating in the National Open Ranking Tournament scheduled to be held in Gonda from May 10 to 12.

The tournament was expected to mark Vinesh Phogat’s comeback to domestic wrestling. However, ahead of the event, the WFI issued a detailed 15-page show-cause notice against the star wrestler, accusing her of indiscipline, violation of anti-doping rules, and actions that allegedly harmed the image of Indian wrestling.

According to the federation, Vinesh Phogat will remain ineligible to participate in domestic competitions until June 26, 2026. The WFI stated that under the anti-doping regulations of international governing body United World Wrestling, athletes returning after retirement are required to provide a minimum six-month notice before resuming competition. The federation alleged that Vinesh failed to complete this mandatory process.

The WFI maintained that the rule applies uniformly to all wrestlers and is necessary to ensure transparency and compliance within the anti-doping framework. Federation officials claimed that allowing exemptions could compromise the integrity and credibility of the system.

The notice reportedly also refers to several past controversies involving the wrestler, including issues linked to the weight category dispute during the 2024 Paris Olympics preparations, alleged anti-doping compliance concerns, and participation in trials across two different weight divisions.

The latest development has intensified the ongoing conflict between Vinesh Phogat and the Wrestling Federation of India, which has been marked by repeated disagreements in recent months. Earlier, the wrestler had accused the federation of deliberately obstructing her return to the sport. She had claimed that officials initially prevented her from registering for the National Ranking Championships.

Although her registration was eventually accepted on the final day, the latest order effectively rules her out of the competition.

The WFI, in its notice, further alleged that Vinesh’s conduct had adversely affected the reputation of Indian wrestling at both national and international levels. It claimed that some of her actions were in violation of the WFI Constitution, international wrestling rules, and anti-doping regulations laid down by the sport’s governing authorities.

At the same time, the federation clarified that the notice was not a final punishment and that Vinesh would be given an opportunity to present her side before any further action is taken. She has been asked to submit her response within a specified period.

Sports experts believe the issue extends beyond an individual athlete and highlights broader concerns regarding compliance with international anti-doping standards and governance procedures in Indian sports administration.

The controversy has once again brought the spotlight back on Indian wrestling, which has witnessed several administrative and disciplinary disputes over the past few years. As of now, neither Vinesh Phogat nor her representatives have issued an official statement responding to the allegations made by the federation.

With debate intensifying within the wrestling community, all eyes are now on Vinesh’s response to the show-cause notice and the next course of action by the Wrestling Federation of India.
