CM Vijay Meets Stalin Amid Shifting Political Equations in Tamil Nadu
Chennai, May 2026 : In a politically significant development following the dramatic realignment in Tamil Nadu politics after the Assembly elections, Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President C. Joseph Vijay on Monday met his predecessor and DMK President M.K. Stalin at the latter’s residence in Alwarpet, Chennai.
The meeting between the two prominent leaders comes at a crucial time when Tamil Nadu is witnessing a major political transition after the TVK’s landmark electoral debut and subsequent formation of the government with outside support from parties that were previously aligned with the DMK-led alliance.
Vijay, who was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, visited Stalin after attending the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected MLAs during the first session of the newly constituted 17th Tamil Nadu Assembly. Political observers view the meeting as an important gesture aimed at maintaining cordial political relations amid the changing alliance dynamics in the state.
The TVK, contesting its maiden Assembly election under Vijay’s leadership, emerged as the single largest party in the 234-member Assembly by securing 108 seats. However, the party fell short of the simple majority mark of 118 seats required to independently form the government.
Following the results, Vijay initiated consultations with several parties that had earlier been part of the DMK-led alliance. After rounds of discussions and negotiations, the Congress party extended support to the TVK and officially distanced itself from the DMK bloc. The CPI, CPI(M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) also announced unconditional outside support to the Vijay-led formation, enabling the TVK to comfortably cross the majority threshold in the Assembly.
The support extended by these parties ultimately paved the way for Vijay to assume office as Chief Minister, marking a major turning point in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
Soon after taking charge, Vijay began outlining the priorities of his new administration. He signed files relating to three major welfare measures, including electricity-related benefits for households, enhanced women’s safety initiatives, and strengthened anti-drug enforcement mechanisms across districts.
The Chief Minister also held meetings with senior bureaucrats and police officials to review law and order, governance priorities, and administrative preparedness under the new government.
Earlier in the day, Vijay paid tribute at the memorial of social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, whom he has frequently cited as one of his ideological inspirations. He later met Dravidar Kazhagam President K. Veeramani and received his greetings.
Meanwhile, political activity intensified inside the Assembly as proceedings formally commenced in the newly elected House. TVK MLA J.C.D. Prabhakar filed his nomination for the post of Speaker ahead of the election to the constitutional position.
The meeting between Vijay and Stalin has triggered widespread political discussions, with analysts closely watching how the relationship between the ruling TVK and the opposition DMK evolves in the coming weeks as the new government settles into office.
