Government’s Preparedness and Response in Vaivakawn Zohnuaia Discussed

Aizawl : This afternoon, in a meeting at Vaivakawn Zohnuaia, Mr. Sangthanmawia addressed concerns regarding the safety of a building with seven floors. The Aizawl District Disaster Management Authority, along with Quick Response Teams, swiftly initiated necessary measures. Er. Lalhriatpuia, Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, held discussions with officials from various departments and community leaders to formulate an action plan.

The building in Vaivakawn Zohnuaia has been a matter of concern since 2017, with both local residents and government authorities closely monitoring its condition. The Aizawl District Disaster Management Authority issued an official directive on 29th August 2024, emphasizing the need to take precautionary measures to ensure public safety.

Sports & Youth Services Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar, who is also the local MLA, visited the site and expressed his satisfaction that no lives or properties were lost due to the incident. He praised the joint efforts of the community and government in mitigating the risk and emphasized the importance of continued vigilance.

Due to the structural concerns, access to the Vaivakawn Zohnuai road and the MZU approach road has been restricted for two-wheelers. However, the Chhangurkawn approach road remains accessible. Approximately 10 households in the area have been identified for relocation to safer locations. Additionally, the Govt. Zohnuai Primary School has been directed to temporarily close, and further assessments will be made regarding water supply connections, including the inspection of the Tui Connection and SIPMIU pipes.

The meeting convened by Aizawl DC Er. Lalhriatpuia included representatives from the Geology & Mining, PWD, Police, and I&PR Departments.
