PM Modi Arrives in Sweden for Bilateral Talks, Business Engagements and European Industry Summit

Gothenburg (Sweden), May 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday arrived in Sweden on the third leg of his five-nation diplomatic tour and was warmly received by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson at the airport in Gothenburg.

In a special gesture, Swedish Gripen fighter jets escorted Prime Minister Modi’s aircraft as it entered Swedish airspace, underlining the significance of the visit and the growing strategic ties between the two nations.

Prime Minister Modi is visiting Sweden at the invitation of Prime Minister Kristersson after concluding his official engagements in the Netherlands. The visit is expected to further deepen cooperation between India and Sweden across sectors such as trade, technology, innovation, green energy, and industrial collaboration.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two Prime Ministers will hold wide-ranging discussions covering the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and explore new opportunities to strengthen economic and strategic cooperation.

The MEA highlighted the growing economic partnership between the two countries, noting that bilateral trade between India and Sweden reached approximately $7.75 billion in 2025. Swedish foreign direct investment (FDI) into India between 2000 and 2025 has crossed $2.825 billion, reflecting increasing commercial engagement between the two economies.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Kristersson are also scheduled to jointly address the European Round Table for Industry, a leading forum of top European business leaders. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is also expected to participate in the event.

The business forum is expected to focus on investment opportunities, industrial partnerships, advanced manufacturing, clean technology, innovation, and economic cooperation between India and Europe.

Prime Minister Modi had earlier visited Sweden in 2018, when he participated in the first India-Nordic Summit. His current visit is being viewed as an important continuation of India’s engagement with Nordic nations and the broader European region.

India’s Ambassador to Sweden, Anurag Bhushan, described the Prime Minister’s visit as “very significant” and highlighted the importance of Gothenburg as Sweden’s industrial and technological hub.

Speaking about the visit, Ambassador Bhushan said Prime Minister Modi would hold bilateral consultations with Prime Minister Kristersson and his leadership team, followed by multiple engagements with the Swedish business community.

“The Honourable Prime Minister will have bilateral consultations with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and his leadership team. Thereafter, he will also engage with the Swedish business community and address members of the European Roundtable of Industry, which consists of some of Europe’s top companies,” Bhushan said.

He described Gothenburg as a city of major strategic relevance.

“This is the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Gothenburg, a historic city established in 1620 that has evolved into the technology, industrial, and innovation heart of Sweden,” he noted.

Bhushan added that the city is also home to a sizeable Indian community, making the visit important from a people-to-people perspective as well.

The Indian envoy further stated that the visit comes at a particularly important moment, especially after India concluded its Free Trade Agreement with the European Union earlier this year.

He said India and Sweden share long-standing and diversified relations spanning trade, innovation, sustainability, education, and advanced technologies.

The visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to cooperation in sectors such as green mobility, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and digital innovation as India continues to strengthen its strategic and economic engagement with Europe.
