PM Modi’s Sweden Visit Marks Strategic Leap in India–Sweden Relations: MEA Highlights Six Key Outcomes

Gothenburg (Sweden), May 2026 : As Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his highly successful and historic visit to Sweden on Sunday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the discussions held during the trip marked a major step forward in strengthening bilateral relations across trade, technology, global geopolitics and long-term development cooperation.

MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George, briefing the media in Gothenburg, said the Prime Minister had a series of productive engagements with Swedish leadership, including Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, where both sides discussed expanding strategic cooperation and aligning future growth pathways.

He added that Prime Minister Modi strongly emphasised India’s vision of “Viksit Bharat 2047”, inviting Swedish companies to actively participate in India’s development journey, describing it as a mutually beneficial and “win-win partnership” for both nations.

According to the MEA, business leaders and CEOs who participated in high-level meetings with the Prime Minister expressed strong confidence in India’s economic trajectory. They acknowledged India’s transformation driven by sustained structural reforms and expressed keen interest in expanding investments and collaborations.

Ambassador Sibi George noted that several Swedish CEOs explicitly referred to India’s “Viksit Bharat 2047” vision during the discussions. He said, “Each one of them spoke about Viksit Bharat. They understand our vision of a developed India by 2047 and they are keen to grow with us and fully utilise the opportunities India offers.”

He also highlighted that Swedish small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are encouraged to participate in India’s growth story, further strengthening the industrial and innovation partnership between the two countries. Discussions also covered enhanced cooperation in defence, security, and strategic technologies.

A major highlight of the visit was Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the European Round Table for Industry, which came shortly after the finalisation of the India–EU Free Trade Agreement. The MEA described it as a landmark engagement between Indian leadership and European business representatives.

Sibi George said this interaction marked one of the most significant business dialogues between India and Europe in recent times, reinforcing India’s position as a key global investment destination.

Cultural Diplomacy and Tagore Legacy Strengthened

The MEA Secretary also highlighted the cultural dimension of the visit, particularly the exchange of gifts between Prime Minister Modi and Swedish Prime Minister Kristersson, which celebrated the shared legacy of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

He said the exchange of Tagore-related artefacts symbolised the deep cultural and intellectual bond between India and Sweden. These exchanges, he noted, further strengthened India’s soft power and enhanced people-to-people connections between the two nations.

According to the MEA, both leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cultural diplomacy and academic collaboration, with Tagore’s legacy serving as a bridge between the two societies.

Global Geopolitical Concerns Discussed

Sibi George further stated that Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Kristersson also exchanged views on the evolving global geopolitical situation, which both sides agreed is increasingly complex and challenging.

He said both leaders expressed shared concerns over global instability and emphasised the need for stronger international cooperation, particularly in trade, security and sustainable development.

He also added that the Prime Minister’s Sweden visit followed an equally important engagement in the Netherlands, where he visited a major dyke project along with the Dutch leadership, showcasing India’s growing interest in global water management and climate resilience initiatives.
