Jashpur’s Pears Transform Farmers’ Lives, Demand Rises Across States

Over 3,500 Farmers Cultivating Pears as Rural Economy Strengthens with Annual Earnings in Lakhs

Raipur, May 2026 : Once known mainly for traditional farming, Jashpur is now emerging as a major hub for pear cultivation. The pears grown in this tribal and hilly district, surrounded by lush greenery, are now reaching large markets in states such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha, going far beyond the borders of Chhattisgarh. For thousands of farmers in the district, pear farming has become a major source of economic prosperity.

The impact of efforts to encourage fruit cultivation under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai is now clearly visible on the ground. The Horticulture Department, along with READS NGO and with support from NABARD, has been motivating farmers to adopt modern horticulture practices. As a result, the area under pear cultivation in Jashpur district has been steadily expanding.

At present, nearly 3,500 farmers in the district are cultivating pears across approximately 3,500 acres of land. These orchards produce around 1.75 lakh quintals of pears annually.

Large-scale pear orchards have been developed in the hilly regions of Sanna, Pandrapath, Kanwai, Mahua, Sonkyari, Manora, Dhawaipai and Geedha. Farmers from these areas carefully pack the harvested pears in crates and transport them directly to markets in other states.

Jashpur’s pears are rapidly becoming the preferred choice among traders due to their quality and taste. According to both farmers and traders, demand for the fruit in outside markets has been increasing continuously.

Pear cultivation has proved highly profitable for local farmers. Many are earning between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh annually per acre through pear farming. This has significantly improved the economic condition of rural households and encouraged several farmers to shift from traditional crops to fruit cultivation.

Officials from the Horticulture Department said that under the National Horticulture Mission scheme, farmers are being actively encouraged to expand pear cultivation in the district. Support is being provided in the form of saplings, technical guidance and specialised training to help farmers achieve better productivity through modern farming techniques.

Today, Jashpur’s pears are not just a fruit product but have become a symbol of farmers’ hard work, self-reliance and the changing rural economy of the region.
