RR Opt to Bowl First Against LSG in Crucial IPL 2026 Clash; Playoff Race Intensifies in Jaipur
Jaipur, May 2026 : Rajasthan Royals (RR) won the toss and elected to bowl first against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their penultimate league-stage match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Tuesday, in a fixture carrying significant implications for the playoff race.
With three of the four playoff spots already secured, the battle for the final berth remains wide open, with five teams still mathematically in contention. Rajasthan Royals, however, enter this must-win encounter under considerable pressure, having suffered three consecutive defeats that have derailed their early-season momentum.
RR began the tournament strongly, winning their first four matches, but their campaign has since faltered, with just two wins in their last eight games. Their struggles at home have been particularly concerning, as they have lost all three matches played at Jaipur this season, putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy.
A defeat on Tuesday could push Rajasthan to the brink of elimination, while a victory would keep their qualification hopes firmly in their own hands heading into the final stretch of the league stage.
On the other hand, Lucknow Super Giants have already been eliminated from playoff contention but have shown renewed energy and freedom in their recent performances. Their spirited display in the previous match against Chennai Super Kings has raised expectations that they will continue to play without pressure and influence the playoff race further.
Toss and Team Decisions
Winning the toss, stand-in Rajasthan Royals captain Yashasvi Jaiswal said the decision to bowl first was influenced by pitch conditions and expected dew later in the game.
“We’re going to bowl first, and I feel like it’s a good wicket. Later on, there will be some dew, I hope. So, we are going to chase,” Jaiswal said.
Speaking about leading the side, Jaiswal expressed pride and confidence in captaining the franchise in a crucial match.
“Captaincy means a lot to me, and I’m always proud to represent the Rajasthan Royals franchise,” he added.
He also provided updates on team changes and player availability, confirming that Riyan Parag was ruled out due to a hamstring injury.
“Riyan had a hamstring injury, and he’ll be fine soon. We have three changes. Sandy, Sushant Mishra and Lhuan-dre Pretorious come in,” Jaiswal said.
He further emphasised the team’s approach going into the must-win encounter, focusing on playing freely and enjoying the contest despite the high-pressure situation.
“I think we are all speaking to everyone, and the mindset and attitude that we will bring out into the ground is to enjoy the game. I’ll just smile and enjoy the game and play,” he said.
LSG Confident Despite Elimination
Lucknow Super Giants skipper Rishabh Pant said his side remains motivated to finish the season strongly, even after being knocked out of playoff contention.
“Pretty confident, we know this is a good wicket to bat on. Happy to either bat or bowl first,” Pant said after the toss.
He added that the team continues to take pride in representing their fans and aims to deliver strong performances in the remaining matches.
“Definitely, as I said in the last few games, we have a lot to play for. As a team, we take pride and confidence in playing every match for our fans,” Pant said.
Pant also confirmed changes in the LSG lineup, including the absence of Aiden Markram due to personal reasons and Mohammed Shami being rested, while Mohsin Khan returns to the XI.
“Aiden is not there because he has gone home for a personal thing. Shami is not playing, and Mohsin is playing. Badoni comes in for Aiden,” he added.
