Iran Says Talks With US Focused on Finalising Peace MoU to End Conflict
Tehran, May 2026 : Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has said that Iran and the United States are currently working to finalise a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the ongoing conflict and easing regional tensions.
Speaking to Iran’s state-run IRIB news agency on Saturday, Baghaei stated that both sides were concentrating on achieving a framework agreement that could eventually lead to a comprehensive peace deal.
“At this stage, our focus is on ending the imposed war,” Baghaei said following the visit of a Pakistani delegation to Tehran on Friday. The delegation included Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
According to Baghaei, Iran’s immediate objective is to secure agreement on a 14-clause memorandum of understanding, which would lay the foundation for a broader settlement.
“Our intention has been to firstly agree on an MoU consisting of 14 clauses,” he said, adding that both parties hoped to reach a final agreement within 30 to 60 days after the document is formally approved.
Baghaei clarified that the proposed timeline would only begin once the memorandum is officially finalised and accepted by all sides involved in the negotiations.
“We are at the stage of finalising the MoU. The issues that are being discussed are focused on ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon,” he stated.
Among the major issues under discussion are the cessation of what Iran described as US maritime attacks and the lifting of restrictions affecting Iranian shipping and trade. Baghaei also mentioned the issue of releasing Iranian frozen assets as a key component of the proposed understanding.
“Among the major topics to be addressed in the MoU are the cessation of US maritime attacks, or naval blockade as they themselves call it, and other issues pertaining to the release of Iranian frozen assets,” he said.
The Iranian spokesperson noted that developments over the next few days would be crucial in determining whether progress could be achieved.
“We should wait and see what will happen within the next three to four days,” Baghaei remarked.
He also stressed that Iran’s nuclear programme was not currently the central focus of the ongoing peace discussions.
Baghaei highlighted Pakistan’s role as the principal mediator in the negotiations, praising Islamabad for facilitating communication between Tehran and Washington during the sensitive diplomatic process.
He said Pakistan had played an “important role” in ensuring the continued exchange of messages between the two countries.
Iran, the United States and Israel agreed to a ceasefire on April 8 after 40 days of conflict that began following US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28.
Following the ceasefire, Iranian and American delegations met in Islamabad on April 11 and 12 for peace talks that did not produce an immediate agreement. However, reports indicate that both sides have continued exchanging proposals through Pakistani mediation in recent weeks in an effort to end the conflict permanently.
