Tamil Nadu CM Vijay to Visit Delhi for First Official Meetings with PM Modi, Sitharaman

New Delhi, May 2026 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph C. Vijay is scheduled to visit the national capital on Wednesday in his first official trip to New Delhi after assuming office as Chief Minister following the recent Assembly elections.

During the visit, Vijay is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to seek greater Central assistance for Tamil Nadu and press for faster approvals for several major development and infrastructure projects.

According to sources, the Chief Minister will travel to Delhi on Wednesday morning and is likely to return to Chennai later the same day after completing his engagements.

Officials said Vijay is expected to submit detailed memoranda highlighting Tamil Nadu’s financial requirements and pending developmental priorities. The discussions are likely to focus on infrastructure expansion, industrial growth, welfare initiatives, connectivity projects and the release of pending Central allocations considered crucial for the state’s economic progress.

The Chief Minister is also expected to raise issues related to urban infrastructure, transport development, industrial corridors and long-pending projects requiring Central clearances and financial backing.

The Delhi visit carries considerable political significance as it comes only weeks after Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), delivered a landmark electoral performance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Contesting its first-ever Assembly election, the TVK emerged as the single largest party in the 234-member Assembly by winning 108 seats, dramatically altering the political landscape of the state and ending decades of uninterrupted dominance by the Dravidian majors.

However, despite securing the highest number of seats, the party fell short of the majority mark of 118, triggering intense post-election negotiations and political realignments.

Vijay subsequently secured support from several parties, including the Congress, Left parties, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), enabling him to comfortably cross the required majority threshold and form the government.

The coalition arrangement has attracted significant attention across political circles, as Tamil Nadu has largely witnessed governments dominated either by the DMK or the AIADMK for several decades.

Political observers view Vijay’s first Delhi visit as an important step toward establishing a working relationship between the newly formed TVK-led coalition government and the BJP-led Centre despite ideological and political differences between the two sides.

The meetings are also expected to provide an early indication of how the new Tamil Nadu government intends to engage with the Union government on administrative and developmental matters.

Officials indicated that Vijay is keen to ensure that Tamil Nadu receives adequate financial and policy support for ongoing and future projects aimed at boosting investment, employment generation and infrastructure development across the state.

The visit is being closely watched both politically and administratively as the new government begins shaping its engagement with the Centre after a historic electoral transition in Tamil Nadu politics.
