Punjab civic elections witness Aam Aadmi Party wave, people endorse Mann government in semifinal before 2027
Chandigarh, May 2026 : The picture emerging from the civic body elections in Punjab has completely changed the political atmosphere of the state. The tremendous public support being received by the Aam Aadmi Party in municipal corporation, municipal council and panchayat elections indicates that the people of Punjab have once again expressed confidence in Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the policies of his government. These elections are not merely local body polls, but the semifinal before the 2027 Assembly elections, in which the Aam Aadmi Party appears to be taking a massive lead.
According to the results declared so far, out of 480 wards, the Aam Aadmi Party has already won 225 seats. Congress has secured 85 seats, Shiromani Akali Dal 71, while the BJP appears restricted to only 15 seats. These figures clearly indicate that the opposition is continuously weakening in Punjab politics, while the grip of the Aam Aadmi Party has strengthened across villages, towns and cities.
The biggest political message came from Gidderbaha, where the Aam Aadmi Party delivered a stunning performance in the stronghold of Punjab Congress president Raja Warring by winning all 13 out of the 13 wards counted so far out of 19 wards. This result is being seen not only as an electoral defeat for Congress but also as a political message that the public now wants to move beyond the old political structure.
In Dhuri, the Aam Aadmi Party almost achieved a clean sweep. By winning 20 out of 21 seats, the party proved that public trust in Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s home constituency has become stronger than ever before. Similarly, in the Haryana Municipal Council, the party secured a majority by winning 7 out of 11 seats, while Congress and BJP lagged behind.
The results of Nabha Municipal Council also narrate the story of the growing support base of the Aam Aadmi Party. Here, the party won 6 out of 12 seats and emerged as the single largest force. BJP, Shiromani Akali Dal and Congress together also failed to create the impact that the Aam Aadmi Party alone appeared to create.
The impact of the work done by the Mann government over the past four years in the fields of electricity, education, healthcare, action against corruption, employment and welfare schemes is now becoming visible on the ground. This is the reason why the opposition is continuously losing credibility among the people. Through this election, the people of Punjab have conveyed that they want politics based on work rather than allegations and counter-allegations.
These results are being considered a serious warning for Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP. Parties that once ruled Punjab politics are now seen struggling for third and fourth positions in many areas. Among the public, the perception has strengthened that these parties kept Punjab trapped for years in the politics of promises and dynastic rule, while the Aam Aadmi Party pushed forward the agenda of system change and development.
The trends emerging from the Malwa and Sirhind regions are also indicating a strong atmosphere in favour of the Aam Aadmi Party. In Bathinda, the party is leading in more than 80 wards. If these trends convert into final results, it will become another historic achievement for the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab politics.
The results of these civic elections clearly indicate that the people of Punjab have given the first signal for the 2027 battle. Public support for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s leadership and the policies of the Aam Aadmi Party appears to be steadily increasing. On the other hand, the biggest question before Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP is why the public is continuously distancing itself from them.
In this political semifinal of Punjab, at present only one slogan seems to be echoing — “Work speaks,” and the magic of the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab continues to grow stronger.
