AAP Wave in Punjab Municipal Elections, Congress–Akali Dal–BJP Suffer Heavy Setback

Chandigarh, May 2026 : The people of Punjab have once again made it clear that they want not promises in politics, but performance and work. The results of the Municipal Corporation, Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections have proved that the policies of the government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have received a strong mandate from the public. This political semi-final ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections has completely changed the political equation of Punjab.

Out of the results declared for 1,441 wards so far, the Aam Aadmi Party has emerged as the biggest force by winning 670 seats. Congress has been reduced to 275 seats, Shiromani Akali Dal has managed 203 seats, while the BJP’s performance has been so weak that 1,142 of its candidates even lost their security deposits. This is not just a defeat, but a serious question mark on the political acceptance of the BJP in Punjab.

AAP has secured major victories across several regions — 20 out of 21 seats in Dhuri, 19 out of 23 in Sunam, 11 out of 13 in Sri Anandpur Sahib, 10 out of 11 in Ramdas, 9 out of 15 in Kartarpur, and 12 out of 19 in Samana. These results clearly indicate that AAP’s support base is not limited to the Assembly level but is also strongly rooted at the local level.

A major setback for Congress came in Gidderbaha, the political stronghold of state Congress president Raja Warring, where voters rejected Congress claims and gave a clear mandate in favour of AAP. The outcome indicates that Punjab politics is moving away from traditional parties and old faces towards governance and development-based politics.

The elections have also shown that the public has completely rejected the alleged misinformation campaign run by the opposition over the last four years. The impact of policies such as free electricity, improvements in schools and hospitals, action against corruption, employment opportunities for youth, and welfare schemes for common people is clearly visible in the election results. Voters have expressed that they want change in daily life rather than rhetoric and accusations.

The BJP’s position has been the most worrying. The party, which projects itself as the biggest political force at the national level, could not even secure a strong third or fourth position in Punjab’s municipal elections. As many as 1,142 BJP candidates lost their deposits, reflecting a strong rejection by voters. The people of Punjab have clearly indicated that politics driven from Delhi or based on agency support has no place in the state.

AAP’s National Media Incharge Anurag Dhanda commented that results from 48 urban bodies show AAP winning 34, while Congress secured only 3 and Akali Dal 6. He said that the so-called “ED party” BJP and its alliances were completely rejected by the people. He added that those who are used to forming governments with the help of agencies have been taught a lesson in real democracy by the people of Punjab.

These elections are being seen as more than just local body polls. They are considered a major indicator of public mood ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The results show strengthening AAP organisation, growing trust in the government, and sustained popularity of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. On the other hand, Congress, Akali Dal and BJP have so far failed to present any strong issue or leadership that can influence voters.

The people of Punjab have sent a clear message through this election: politics based on performance will be supported, while outdated politics, dynastic control, opportunism, and negativity will continue to be rejected. The AAP wave in municipal elections is now being seen as a major signal shaping the future direction of Punjab politics.
