Richa Ghosh’s Heroics Go in Vain as England Edge India by Five Runs in Women’s T20 World Cup Warm-Up
Cardiff, June 2026 : Wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh produced a sensational counterattacking innings to almost pull off an unlikely victory for India, but England held their nerve in a thrilling finish to register a narrow five-run win in a Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 warm-up match at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Wednesday.
Chasing a challenging target of 172, India found themselves under pressure for most of the innings after losing wickets at regular intervals. However, Richa’s blistering knock of 68 off just 36 deliveries revived India’s hopes and brought the contest down to the wire before England eventually emerged victorious.
Earlier, England posted a competitive total of 171 for six after strong contributions from Amy Jones and captain Nat Sciver-Brunt. Despite India’s bowlers maintaining control for a significant part of the innings, England accelerated effectively in the latter stages to set up a demanding chase.
England made a confident start with wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones leading the charge. She played an aggressive innings of 64 runs, finding boundaries regularly and providing the hosts with a solid platform. Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt complemented her perfectly, scoring a fluent 57 while keeping the scoreboard moving through the middle overs.
The pair dominated the Indian bowling attack, striking eight boundaries each and putting together a crucial partnership. England’s innings received an additional boost in the closing overs when Danielle Gibson unleashed an explosive cameo, smashing an unbeaten 30 off only 12 deliveries. Her late assault, which included four boundaries and a six, helped England cross the 170-run mark.
India’s bowlers struggled in the final phase, conceding 43 runs in the last three overs. Shreyanka Patil was the standout performer with the ball, claiming two wickets, while Shafali Verma also chipped in with a wicket.
India’s chase got off to an uneven start. Shafali Verma struck a few attractive shots during her brief stay before being bowled by Issy Wong for 13. Smriti Mandhana also failed to make an impact and was dismissed cheaply by Linsey Smith, leaving India under early pressure.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur attempted to rebuild the innings but could only manage 17 runs before departing. Yastika Bhatia scored 15, while Bharti Fulmali and Radha Yadav contributed 18 and 16 respectively. However, England’s disciplined bowling attack ensured that partnerships never developed, keeping India behind the required rate.
Linsey Smith and Tilly Corteen Coleman bowled with excellent control, while Charlie Dean struck twice at a crucial stage to remove Shreyanka Patil and Kranti Gaud, further denting India’s hopes.
Amid the collapse, Richa Ghosh stood tall with a breathtaking display of power-hitting and fearless strokeplay. The right-hander attacked the England bowlers from the outset, smashing nine boundaries and two sixes during her innings. Her aggressive approach shifted the momentum and brought India back into contention.
Richa particularly capitalised on loose deliveries from Issy Wong and Lauren Filer, finding gaps with ease and clearing the ropes when required. She also shared a quickfire 33-run partnership with Radha Yadav off just 19 balls, injecting fresh belief into the Indian camp.
As the match entered its final over, India required 17 runs for victory. Richa immediately raised hopes by smashing a boundary and a six off Linsey Smith, reducing the target to just six runs from the final three deliveries. With the contest finely balanced, India looked poised for a remarkable comeback.
However, the turning point came on the very next ball when Richa attempted another attacking stroke and was stumped by Alice Capsey off Smith’s bowling. Her dismissal effectively ended India’s challenge, and Smith wrapped up the innings by claiming the final wicket to seal a dramatic five-run victory for England.
England will now shift focus to their opening Women’s T20 World Cup match against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston on June 12. India, meanwhile, will take on arch-rivals Pakistan at the same venue on June 14 as they continue preparations for the main tournament.
Brief Scores: England 171/6 in 20 overs (Amy Jones 64, Nat Sciver-Brunt 57, Danielle Gibson 30*; Shreyanka Patil 2/29) beat India 166 all out in 19.5 overs (Richa Ghosh 68, Harmanpreet Kaur 17; Linsey Smith 3/42, Danielle Gibson 2/17) by five runs.
