Iranian Delegation Arrives in Switzerland for High-Stakes Talks with US on Nuclear Programme and Regional Stability

Geneva, June 2026: A senior Iranian delegation arrived in Switzerland late Saturday to begin a new round of negotiations with the United States aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East, advancing discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme, and reinforcing efforts to maintain regional stability.

Swiss authorities confirmed the arrival of the Iranian team, which is expected to participate in talks at the scenic Burgenstock resort overlooking Lake Lucerne. The discussions form part of the implementation process of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently signed between Washington and Tehran to ease hostilities and create a framework for broader diplomatic engagement.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Switzerland’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the Iranian delegation and noted that it was proceeding to the Burgenstock venue for consultations linked to the implementation of the bilateral agreement between the two countries.

Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported that the delegation, operating under the codename “Minab 168,” had successfully arrived in Switzerland and was preparing to participate in the negotiations. The talks are being closely watched internationally as they represent one of the most significant diplomatic engagements between the two nations in recent years.

Earlier in the day, Swiss officials reiterated their commitment to facilitating dialogue by providing what they described as a “discreet and reliable setting” for negotiations. Switzerland has long served as a neutral venue for diplomatic discussions involving countries with strained relations and continues to play a key role in supporting communication between the United States and Iran.

The negotiations were initially scheduled to begin on Friday but were postponed, leading to a delayed start. Despite the postponement, both sides have expressed interest in continuing discussions aimed at building confidence and addressing long-standing disputes.

Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance departed for Switzerland on Saturday, signalling Washington’s commitment to the diplomatic process. Speaking to reporters before boarding his flight at Joint Base Andrews, Vance said he hoped the talks would generate progress on two critical issues: Iran’s nuclear programme and the preservation of the fragile ceasefire in Lebanon.

“I think we’re going to hopefully make progress on the nuclear issue, make progress on the Lebanon ceasefire issue. Those are the two big things that I think we’re focused on,” Vance said. He added that Iran would likely bring its own priorities and concerns to the negotiating table.

According to the Vice President, Iranian representatives had already reached Switzerland and technical experts from various parties were on the ground preparing for substantive discussions. He indicated that the talks could extend over several days as negotiators work through complex political and security issues.

Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance travelled aboard a Gulfstream C-37 aircraft, departing Washington in the afternoon. US officials said the smaller aircraft was used because it was available sooner than the Vice President’s usual plane.

The meetings near Lucerne are expected to focus on implementing key provisions of the MoU while exploring pathways toward a broader diplomatic settlement. Observers view the negotiations as an important opportunity to reduce regional tensions and establish a foundation for sustained dialogue between the United States and Iran.
