Mohammad Yunus Calls for Sheikh Hasina’s Extradition from India

Bangladesh, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India after being forced to resign. Mohammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, has made strong remarks about Hasina’s current situation. Yunus accused Hasina of making political statements about Bangladesh while residing in India, which he claims is causing diplomatic issues. He has announced plans to request the Indian government to extradite her.

Yunus stated that if India wishes to retain Hasina until her extradition, she must cease making political comments. He emphasized during an interview in Dhaka that Bangladesh values its relationship with India, but expressed frustration over India’s perception that the country would become like Afghanistan without Hasina. Yunus criticized India’s view that the Awami League is the only legitimate party in Bangladesh, dismissing other parties as Islamic.

He expressed discontent with Hasina’s actions, describing her continued statements from India as problematic. Yunus remarked that if Hasina were to remain silent, her presence might be less contentious, but her ongoing commentary from abroad is causing difficulties. He stressed that the Bangladeshi public had largely moved on from Hasina, but her vocal presence from India keeps the issue alive.

Amid protests in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India, which led to widespread violence in her home country. The protests, which initially opposed a reservation system for families of freedom fighters, escalated into larger demonstrations demanding Hasina’s resignation. Despite her attempts to quell the unrest through both strategic and forceful measures, she ultimately yielded to the protesters’ demands.

In the wake of Hasina’s departure, Mohammad Yunus has taken charge of an interim government in Bangladesh. He highlighted the growing dissatisfaction with Hasina’s continued involvement from India, noting that her statements are exacerbating tensions. Yunus underscored the need for Hasina to remain silent to prevent further complications in diplomatic relations.

The violence that erupted following Hasina’s resignation saw attacks on police stations and widespread destruction, resulting in numerous casualties. The interim government, led by Yunus, now faces the challenge of stabilizing the country amid the turmoil.
