Three Indian Oil Tankers Safely Cross Strait of Hormuz, Strengthening Energy Security

New Delhi, June 2026: India’s energy and maritime security received a major boost after three Indian-flagged crude oil tankers successfully navigated the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and are now headed towards Indian ports carrying substantial quantities of crude oil. The successful transit comes at a time when shipping activity in the region is gradually normalising following months of geopolitical uncertainty and disruptions.

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced the development on Saturday, describing it as an important achievement for India’s maritime sector and energy supply chain. He said the government has been working closely with various agencies to ensure the safety of Indian vessels, crew members and critical cargo moving through sensitive international waters.

In a message posted on social media platform X, Sonowal stated that the Indian-flagged tankers Desh Vaibhav, Desh Vibhor and Sanmar Herald had successfully completed their passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Together, the vessels are transporting more than 8.6 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil cargo and have a total of 94 Indian crew members on board.

The minister emphasised that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government of India has accorded the highest priority to protecting the nation’s maritime interests and securing vital energy supply routes. He added that continuous coordination is being maintained among relevant authorities to guarantee the safety of Indian seafarers and ensure uninterrupted energy supplies to the country.

According to officials, the three tankers are expected to reach their respective destinations in India over the coming days. Desh Vaibhav is scheduled to arrive at Vadinar Port on June 24, while Desh Vibhor is expected to dock at Sikka Port on the same day. The third vessel, Sanmar Herald, which crossed the Strait on June 20, is expected to reach Paradip Port on July 1.

The successful voyage is particularly significant because the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints. A large portion of global oil shipments passes through the narrow waterway, making any disruption a matter of concern for energy-importing nations such as India.

Shipping traffic through the Strait had faced challenges in recent months due to heightened tensions in the Gulf region. However, the situation began to improve after diplomatic efforts led to a temporary easing of tensions. On June 18, the United States announced the lifting of restrictions on maritime movement through the Strait, allowing commercial shipping operations to resume more freely.

The reopening of the vital shipping corridor followed a reported agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at reducing regional tensions. The understanding reportedly included measures related to Iran’s nuclear programme and the easing of certain sanctions, helping restore confidence in maritime trade routes and facilitating the movement of oil tankers.

For India, which imports a significant portion of its crude oil requirements, the uninterrupted flow of energy supplies is crucial for economic stability and industrial growth. Officials noted that ensuring safe access to international shipping lanes remains a top priority, particularly in regions that are vulnerable to geopolitical tensions.

The successful transit of the three tankers is being viewed as a positive development for India’s energy security framework. It highlights the effectiveness of coordinated maritime planning, diplomatic engagement and operational preparedness in safeguarding the country’s strategic interests and maintaining reliable energy supply chains.
