Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Released from Jail After Supreme Court Grants Bail
Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Convenor, Arvind Kejriwal, was released from Tihar jail on Friday evening after the Supreme Court granted him bail in connection with a corruption case related to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam.
Kejriwal’s lawyers submitted surety bonds for his release before a special CBI judge, following the Supreme Court’s ruling. Upon his release, he was greeted by a large crowd of AAP leaders, supporters, and his wife, Sunita Kejriwal. Kejriwal then led a roadshow from the jail to his official residence.
Speaking to his supporters outside the jail, Kejriwal said, “Today, I want to say that I have come out of jail with my courage multiplied 100 times… The walls of their jail cannot weaken Kejriwal’s resolve. I will pray to God to keep guiding me on the right path, and I will continue fighting against those trying to weaken and divide the country.”
Earlier, AAP supporters were seen celebrating outside Kejriwal’s residence by bursting crackers.
The Supreme Court granted bail, stating that prolonged incarceration would amount to an unjust deprivation of liberty. The court imposed certain conditions on his release, including a prohibition on public comments about the case and the requirement to attend all trial court hearings unless exempted.
Kejriwal was initially arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in connection with the case. He was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on May 10 but was ordered to surrender on June 2. While in ED custody, he was re-arrested by the CBI on June 26. On July 12, the Supreme Court granted him interim bail in the ED case, but his CBI custody was later extended by Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court.
