Telangana Gears Up for Grand Bonalu Celebrations from July 16 to August 13

Hyderabad, June 2026 : Telangana is preparing to celebrate its iconic Bonalu festival with grandeur and devotion as the annual festivities are scheduled to be held from July 16 to August 13 across Hyderabad and surrounding districts. The state government has announced extensive arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival, which is regarded as one of the most significant cultural and religious events in Telangana.

The month-long celebrations will commence on July 16 at the historic Sri Jagadamba Mahankali Temple located at Golconda Fort, marking the beginning of the Ashada Bonalu festivities. The festival, deeply rooted in Telangana’s cultural heritage, attracts lakhs of devotees every year, particularly women who offer prayers and traditional food offerings to Goddess Mahakali.

To review preparations, Telangana Endowments Minister Konda Surekha, currently on an official visit to London, chaired a virtual meeting with senior officials from various departments. The review meeting was attended by Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Mohammed Azharuddin, legislators, and senior government officials.

During the meeting, the minister directed all departments to work in close coordination to provide seamless facilities for devotees visiting temples in Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Ranga Reddy, and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts. She emphasized that Bonalu is not merely a festival but a celebration that reflects the spirit, traditions, and collective faith of the people of Telangana.

Calling Bonalu a symbol of Telangana’s rich cultural identity, Surekha stated that this year’s celebrations would be organised on a grand scale across the jurisdictions of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri Corporations. She stressed the need for robust planning to ensure devotees experience the festivities without inconvenience.

The minister expressed gratitude to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for allocating Rs 20 crore for the organisation of this year’s Bonalu celebrations. She noted that government support for the festival has increased significantly in recent years, enabling authorities to enhance infrastructure and devotee services.

Officials were instructed to utilise the allocated funds effectively for temple development, decorative lighting, floral arrangements, installation of CCTV surveillance systems, queue management, sanitation measures, drinking water facilities, and medical camps. Special emphasis was also placed on crowd management and public safety.

Recognising the huge influx of devotees from across Telangana, Surekha asked the Transport Department to arrange additional bus services and strengthen connectivity to major temple locations. She also directed authorities to implement special traffic management plans, deploy additional medical teams, and ensure comprehensive security arrangements at key venues expected to witness heavy footfall.

Bonalu celebrations are traditionally held in three phases. Following the opening ceremonies at Golconda Fort, the festivities move to the renowned Ujjaini Mahankali Temple in Secunderabad for the celebrated Lashkar Bonalu. The festival concludes in Hyderabad’s Old City with grand celebrations at the Sri Simhavahini Mahankali Temple in Lal Darwaza and the Sri Akkanna Madanna Mahankali Temple in Haribowli.

A distinctive feature of Bonalu is the participation of women devotees, who carry beautifully decorated pots containing cooked rice, jaggery, curd, and other offerings to the Goddess as a mark of gratitude and devotion.

The origins of the festival are believed to date back more than 150 years, when a devastating cholera outbreak struck the region. According to local tradition, devotees began offering Bonalu to Goddess Mahakali to seek her blessings and protection from the epidemic. Since then, the festival has evolved into a vibrant annual celebration that showcases Telangana’s traditions, spirituality, and community spirit.
