GI-Tagged Rewa Sundarja Mangoes Reach UAE in Landmark Export, Boosting Prospects for Madhya Pradesh Farmers
New Delhi, June 2026 : In a significant milestone for India’s agricultural exports, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first-ever commercial export of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Rewa Sundarja mangoes from Madhya Pradesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), marking the international debut of the premium fruit.
The maiden shipment, comprising one metric tonne of the renowned Rewa Sundarja mangoes, was exported by M/s Salt Range Foods Pvt. Ltd. to the UAE. The export is expected to open new global markets for the unique mango variety while enhancing income opportunities for farmers in the Rewa region.
Celebrated for its exceptional sweetness, rich aroma, fibreless pulp and distinctive flavour, the Rewa Sundarja mango enjoys a strong reputation among fruit lovers. Its GI tag has further strengthened its identity as a premium regional product with export potential.
The successful export has already translated into higher returns for growers. According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the exporter purchased the mangoes from farmers at Rs 150 per kilogram, offering a premium of Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kilogram above the prevailing local market price of Rs 100-110 per kilogram. Officials believe this premium pricing will encourage more farmers to adopt export-quality cultivation methods, improved post-harvest handling and international packaging standards.
The exported consignment was sourced from Seondha Farmer Producer Company Limited and progressive farmer Sonu Gupta of Govindgarh in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district. The fruits were subsequently graded, processed and packed at the APEDA-supported pack house operated by Trisagar Farmer Producer Company in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh.
Following grading and packaging, the mangoes underwent all mandatory phytosanitary inspections and export compliance procedures before being transported to Varanasi Airport for air shipment to the UAE.
The Ministry stated that APEDA worked extensively with the Madhya Pradesh Department of Horticulture, exporters, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), pack house operators and overseas buyers over several months to establish export linkages for the GI-tagged fruit.
These collaborative efforts culminated in identifying a buyer in the UAE, paving the way for the commercial export of the Rewa Sundarja mango and creating opportunities for sustained international demand in the years ahead.
Officials said the successful shipment represents more than just a single export consignment. It demonstrates how coordinated efforts involving government agencies, producer organisations and exporters can help regional agricultural products access premium overseas markets.
The export also underscores the growing importance of Geographical Indication (GI) certification in enhancing the global identity of region-specific agricultural products. GI registration not only protects the authenticity of unique produce but also helps build consumer confidence in international markets by highlighting their distinct origin and quality.
The Commerce Ministry expressed confidence that the successful debut of Rewa Sundarja mangoes in the UAE would pave the way for regular exports in future seasons, strengthening India’s fruit export portfolio while generating better incomes for farmers and promoting value-added agricultural exports from Madhya Pradesh.
