PM Modi Highlights India’s BRICS 2026 Vision, Puts Global South at the Core of Sustainable Energy Future
New Delhi, June 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday underlined India’s vision of placing the Global South at the heart of a secure, resilient, equitable and sustainable global energy architecture during the country’s BRICS Chairship in 2026. He stressed that stronger international partnerships, coupled with robust domestic policies, are essential to building resilient energy systems capable of meeting future global challenges.
Sharing an article authored by Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar on social media platform X, the Prime Minister highlighted India’s commitment to fostering greater cooperation among emerging economies to accelerate the global energy transition.
“As India takes up the BRICS Chairship in 2026, Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar writes that India seeks to place the Global South at the centre of a secure, resilient, equitable and sustainable global energy future,” PM Modi posted.
The Prime Minister noted that India firmly believes resilient energy systems can be achieved not only through strong national policy frameworks but also by expanding international collaboration.
“The article reflects India’s belief that resilient energy systems are built not only through effective domestic policies but also through stronger global partnerships,” he said.
In his article, Khattar observed that the global energy landscape is witnessing rapid transformation, making cooperation, innovation and technological advancement increasingly important for developing nations striving to balance economic growth, energy security and environmental sustainability.
He said India intends to utilise its BRICS Chairship to convert this shared vision into concrete outcomes by deepening cooperation among member countries in critical sectors, including clean energy, energy access, innovation, emerging technologies and sustainable development.
According to Khattar, India has made significant progress in strengthening its energy sector over the past decade. He highlighted that the country has achieved more than 50 per cent of its installed electricity generation capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, surpassing its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target ahead of schedule.
The minister also pointed to India’s ongoing efforts to diversify its energy mix and improve long-term energy security through initiatives such as coal gasification, green hydrogen production, electric mobility and the expansion of the national power transmission network.
He further emphasised the growing role of digital technologies in modernising India’s power sector. Initiatives such as smart metering and the India Energy Stack, he said, are helping create a more efficient, transparent and technology-driven electricity ecosystem capable of supporting future demand.
Khattar argued that BRICS nations possess complementary strengths that can be leveraged to develop secure, resilient and sustainable energy systems while addressing the priorities of the Global South.
He said closer collaboration among BRICS members would enable emerging economies to share best practices, promote innovation, strengthen energy infrastructure and accelerate the transition towards cleaner sources of energy without compromising developmental objectives.
The minister also stressed that international cooperation will remain vital in addressing common challenges related to energy affordability, climate resilience and technological access.
India’s BRICS Chairship in 2026, he added, presents an important opportunity to strengthen multilateral cooperation and ensure that the concerns and aspirations of developing nations occupy a central place in shaping the future global energy agenda.
